Unused gift cards are not hurting the economy, due to most being forgotten in someone’s wallet or purse and never used or in many states they are allowed to deduct a % “fee” of the money on them every month until they are depleted so the company keeps the money and the product.
Kroger has a new rewards program that makes getting your rewards from the credit card almost impossible. Guess who is changing credit provider? Two bonuses: I don’t shop at Fred Meyer or have to fight with US Bank to see card information.
I love gift cards. They’re perfect for when you don’t know someone well enough to get them something personal or if you don’t want to waste money on something you know they won’t use.
I just cleaned out my wallet and found some gift cards in there. I checked the balances. There’s one for a local custard place that has less than $5 (and then I went there shortly after and forgot to use the card again!), a Wendy’s with less than $5 and then I found a Visa that still has $20 and change on it. I don’t remember how much it started with. I was glad because I was going to put that toward a new model Keurig along with the $50 Visa the company sent everyone and any other gift cards I got. But a friend got me the Keurig for Christmas. Now I have to think of something else I want!
“Forgotten gift card” is like “quantum physics” to me. I don’t understand either one! I’ve never forgotten a gift card! Even if I get one to a place where I don’t shop, I remember to give it to someone.
I don’t see why people dislike them so much. Other than possibly getting one for a store you dislike or never shop at; gift cards are just like cash!
*Note: If you do ever get a gift card for a store you don’t shop at here’s a well-written article with ideas for you: https://donotpay.com/learn/gift-card-exchange
Gift cards always have something to keep them from being used. Either it is a store that one does not shop at or it cannot be used towards purchases larger than the balance on the card (when one will pay the difference otherwise) – last purchase on the card must be for the exact balance or what is left on the card will be lost.

A gift card is a zero interest loan to the issuer.

Try spending the exact amount of a gift card. Over spend or leave a little for the issuer.

Just get a gift certificate so you can get what you want.

Unused gift cards are “hurting the economy”? This is what happens when you don’t understand economics.

The only one I have is a $10 Starbucks card. I don’t do Starbucks so it is from last year.
