i did a stint of night duty as a museum guard. One of the rooms on my beat was where the anthropology department stored & displayed various bones, skulls, deathmasks, busts, & complete skeletons. One of those skeletons had an perfectly round hole in the temple from a bullet or icepick perhaps? Another had severe scoliosis. One casting/deathmask was of a microcephalic head. A coworker pointed it out to me, saying, “look at that guy! People probably stared at him his entire life and they’re still staring at him!” i often wondered who those people may have been and how they wound up in a display case. In the silent darkness of that room, my 23 year-old self pondered mortality.
Two students walking past the anthropology building saw the professor’s decapitated corpse lying under an air conditioner with some sort of bloody jigsaw puzzle nearby. They wondered, “What’s that on the path – a head?”
This would make an excellent 24-minute teleplay. Only one actor on screen and the various voices of the skulls. This idea that when we die, we are still somehow concious and here even after all but the skull remains inhabited by their souls or spirits.

They’ll end up in the custody of the department head.

How sad. I’m sure the Prof would have been happy to be exhibited to allow young people to learn by studying his skull.

Whenever I’m at the Museum of Natural History looking at hominid and human skeletons I think to myself, “If that was me I’d be p***ed as hell!”
