Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for May 31, 2013
Transcript:
Mrs. Berger: "Cookies! Oh-where's knute?" Gunther: "He yelled "dance lesson's over!" Into my recorder and left" Mrs. Berger: "Why did he do that?" Gunther: "Because I'm a sweaty-palmed, ear-painting toe crusher! Rosa will HATE our prom date!" Mrs. Berger: "Oh, Gunnie. Rosa's not worried about crushed toes. She likes you because you don't crush her spirit" Gunther: "Well, MY spirit's crushed" Gunther: "Have a cookie, dear"

Well, looks like it’s Mom, Luann or Rosa.
Could be interesting with Luann. I mean, after all. They are just good old friends.
This could be a whole new story line.

See, that’s what we need: More of these Donna Reed, June Cleaver, Harriet Nelsion-type moms in the world today insteadof these Roseanne Barr, Marge Simpson, Peggy Griffin-typemoms we have now! And this comic strip is a fine example!

Uh, Gunther?
Now that Knute’s gone and AFTER You’ve eaten Your Cookie and Had that “Little Talk with Mom”, Go to Your Room, Lock Your Door, Sit on Your Bed and ASK Yourself this Question: “How to YOU REALLY Feel about Rosa?”

I think Evans drawing skills are limited….Gunther’s mom looks like Brad in drag

Gunther, you should be GLAD that Knute didn’t like dancing with you…
JayBluE over 11 years ago
I guess you can subtitle today’s strip either:(1) “Dancing With the Scars”-(2) “Dancing With the Bizarre”

@Fly on the Wall: That’s funny, I was going to say the opposite. In the first panel Gunther’s eyes look crossed with frustration and anger, and in the third his eyes are more focused. Pretty good considering they are just dots:) But I know what you mean. Mr. Evan’s style has come to include decades of evolving character designs, and Mrs. Gunther’s Mom does look like she comes from the ‘Brad’ branch of his art. For me most noticeable is the difference between Tiffany and Toni, and the similarity between Toni and Rosa and Anne. Someone said Tiffany has lips like a duck, but that’s just the style she has evolved into. But in contrast with the Toni style (less caricaturish) it might look that way. If Mr. Evans drew all his characters in the Luann/Tiffany style, it wouldn’t be noticeable. So yes, I do see the similarity between Mrs. Gunther’s mom and Brad in that sense:)
Tiffany…so beautiful…sigh!

Though awkward, I bet mom gives some dance lessons to Gunther.

Thank you IamJayBluE, I am a late comer to this series. ‘Berger’… good name:)
JayBluE over 11 years ago
True! And also, he may be overthinking it, with her… He may be building all of this up, and she may pleasantly surprise him (whether now in learning, or at the dance) with what she really expects (or doesn’t expect, for that matter…)….

Ever watch the new TV series “Bates Hotel”? Guther and Norman look/act like they have been seperated at birth!!

Proms aren’t about dancing! They’re about dressing up and having a date. I only danced one dance at my prom! The rest of the time we (date/friends) just hung out and talked. There was a balcony (probably a mezzanine) where we could watch the prom. I didn’t mind the lack of dancing. I ended up marrying that date! We never danced. Not everyone likes it.

Imagine what would happen if Rosa walked in on a lesson with Luann. Or, worse, Quill walked in.
JayBluE over 11 years ago
“The other possibility is that she is trying really hard to make a pun using the word “crush” ^You’re right, she was making a pun. The purpose, though was to make the point that Gunther was so worried about the “mechanical” aspects of the date, worrying about them being “perfect” (as much perfect as an imperfect person can make it, that is) that he’s losing sight of what Rosa really likes about him: That when he’s himself, she really enjoys him, and not when he’s trying too hard…—He’s so intent on making it special, but Ms. Berger is trying to help him see that if he “loosens up” just a little (the reference to “not crushing her spirit”) that everything will go just fine…===That’s why I suggested that after the Knute experience, today’s strip should be subtitled either “Dancing With the Scars”, or “Dancing With the Bizarre” because of Knute’s teaching style which didn’t fit ol’ Gunth in this case…..

Oh, and now that Knute definitely knows there’s a prom—wonder if he’ll ask Crystal? The dude obviously knows how to dance and how to treat a girl right!

If Gunther’s is part of a military family, I don’t think “Gunny” will be part of a US Marine family. Although Gunny is a military term for Gunnery Sergeant, there’s NO WAY Gunther might’ve came from the Marines. I mean, I can’t imagine Gunther’s Dad resembling R. Lee Ermey acting as Gunnery Sergeant Harmon in the movie, “Full Metal Jacket,” because of all of the cursing, profanity, and crazy stuff in that movie. (R. Lee Ermey played a dynamite part in that war movie!). Gunther was raised up sweet and nice. Maybe Gunth’s Dad, came from the Air Force, but not the Marines! Anyway, we’ll have to wait and see what’s up Mr. Evan’s and his daughter’s sleeves.
