Miss Phelps: "Mr. Fogarty and I will be chaperones at the prom. Are you attending. Miss Halper?" Bernice: "No. Delta and I are going to feed a needy family" Miss Phelps: "Well, good for you! Who remembers prom 40 years later anyway?" Bernice: "So you didn't go to yours?" Miss Phelps: "No, like you, I chose to be sensible and do something important!" Bernice: "What was that?" Miss Phelps: "I.... um... Let's see..."

She probably stayed home and knitted new doilies for the Morris chair. LOL

I did something important! So important I…err…forgot what it was.
Funny, what she remembered is not going, not what she did instead.

Oh boy. I sure hope Bernice changes her mind and goes to prom.

Beep!… Beep!… Beep!… (It’ll take a lot of manuvering to negotiate this bit o’ space!…)– Ms. Phelps almost had a point… but she can’t seem to unlock her “file cabinet”… Her mind (like a golf course) is full of holes sometimes, though… – Will Ms. Phelps be able to get in and out of her “memory vault” in time?… – Will she remember what she went in there to look for, in the first place?….

Ms Phelps is a great example. . . of why Bernice SHOULD go to the Prom.

Fog IS going to this prom and suggesting that it’s good that Bernie isn’t? Sounds like a conflict of perspective to me.

OMG – Ms Phelps didn’t go to her Prom. Take that as a warning – Berneice. Go back to the dress shop and buy that sucker!

I’ve been out of high school 11 years and I still remember not going to prom. Reason: didn’t know with whom to go. I was the only Latter-day Saint (commonly known as Mormon) in my class. Sure there some fellow Mormons in the lower classes, but still didn’t know with whom to go.
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Actually, they used to show the gym teacher (a Mrs. Allison)…she was the one present during the resolution of the “cell phone scandal”…but her teacher-ing services haven’t been required in a while…
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
And there was a Ms. Manezone who was the Art teacher… – Familiar last name, but an unfamiliar face… (probably developed the same way as the Shannon Daytona/Shannon Lewis “goof/non-goof”)….
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Yeah, that’s how it usually happens…. – Or they were too busy looking at each other and quickly turning away, while everyone else stepped back and said: “eww!”…

I’d count Mr. Hightower, since he is the boss teacher… – But he is usually moonlighting as a puppet scientist…

Phelps stayed home, got wasted, ate brownies and pizza, and listened to Pink Floyd with her friends who also didn’t go to prom.

I hope she goes. That dress is a killer! But, with little time to meet a guy, who would take her? We’d better hurry up!

It would seem that Ms. Phelps will be written out of the strip when the seniors graduate— it would be too contrived to have her (or Fogarty) suddenly getting hired by a local college.

Er, Miz Phelps?
Do You ACTUALLY Remember ANYTHING from 40 Years Ago?
raster44 almost 11 years ago
Funny, I didn’t go to my own prom but went to two my junior year and three my senior and two as a college freshman.
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
If I wrote this strip, I’d have Bernice attend college at Miskatonic University, in Arkham Massachusetts. She could get a student job at the campus library, where the Necronomicon is kept!
seyleigh almost 11 years ago
Why are these characters afraid to say they just don’t like school dances? Does anyone actually believe their “I’m a saint for not going” speach? Delta and Ms. Phelps are not and were not saints, they just don’t/didn’t want to go. Bernice does, and now feels like she has to do something more meaningful than having fun and dressing up.
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
Well— this Prom situation is really getting involved! If this storyline is going to last until April, there should be plots involving all the major characters, with plenty of intrigue, drama and “the unexpected.” It will really be something to watch it all unfold…

This would have made for an exciting story of the first interracial lesbian couple going to their prom.
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 11 years ago
Delta doesn’t want to go, so she shouldn’t. Bernice does want to go, so she should (if she can find a date). That’s pretty much all there is to it, so will we have to stretch this out for 2 more months? It seems to have gone on way too long already.
Buckimion almost 11 years ago
I’ve been out of high school 29 years (this June) and WISH I’d skipped mine…a last-minute decision prompted by a sudden fear of not going. My tux was formerly a white bargain-basement number dyed yellow to hide stains with black velvet trim. To top that off, I had won a number of medals that day for various competitions and teen sense had me pin them on…I looked like a banana republic dictator. My “date” was a close friend that had just broke up with her boyfriend, but while at the prom he showed up and convinced her to come home with him where she got knocked up with baby #2. (I had been accused of being the father of #1 but that’s another long story…)
TORAD_07 almost 11 years ago
OMG! Delta actually got to Bernince! Ohhh The horror! :)
Let’s just hope something happens to change Bern’s mind, as I really wanted to see her in that dress! And having fun. Ms. Phelps is making a good point. Hope it gets across to Bern.

Bernice what if the needy don’t want to be fed on your time table. “We are going to force-feed the needy”

go to the prom, it IS something you will remember all your life. I went to the prom 3 years in a row but mostly I only remember my Senior prom, had fun, last big party of the senior year……..great memories. Also that was 47 years ago.

I remember my prom 53 years ago! You can always do something “meaningful” and “important” anytime. Prom does not come that often!!!!
LouEthelip almost 11 years ago
I still remember my prom night even close to 40 years later. I remember it because I couldn’t get a date (finishing my high school career dateless) and wound up working at a restraunt. Still remember how much it hurt to have my high school friends and their dates show up and knowing I’ll never get that experience back.
milania almost 11 years ago
What a pair of losers. They could “feed a needy family” ANY night of the year
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace almost 11 years ago
Most needy people are not bullies
Justifying the bullies’ actions by them being needy is a means of saying, “It’s okay, he isn’t responsible.”
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace almost 11 years ago
Just so I get points for trying
ewalnut almost 11 years ago
I doubt Miss Phelps helped a needy family instead of going to her school prom. But going to the prom is an expensive gamble for someone like Bernice. She may not have a good time there at all.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace almost 11 years ago
I am reminded, however, that Dr Sigmund Freud noted his nutty patients had poor parents and generations came to believe that was the cause.People finally realized they were only looking at a small segment of humanity to draw conclusions from, so they looked at the general populatiion including the many who were NOT nutjobs and discovered they also had poor parenting.

Bernice WILL go to the prom…with Leslie Knox. You read it here first.

Delta only cares about what she wants. She will cook whatever she thinks is best for the needy family whether they like it or not. Probably kale and tofu. If Delta was really such a good person she would be a better listener and encourage her friend to go to the prom.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-. Delta will get asked and decide to go, leaving Bernice alone -Exactly what I’ve been suspecting
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
-no where my wife works. Strictly on a rotating basis. and they get PAID.-Your wife is fortunate. This was not the case for my aunts, and still isn’t for my cousins.
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
Altruism like Delta’s that occurs only in reaction to a certain circumstance (such as Senior Prom) is suspect. Bernice in the long run would probably be better off going to the prom.
ACTIVIST1234 almost 11 years ago
Well, it was important at the time! By the time Bern & Delta get to be professionals, they’ll have forgotten these baby steps too. But taking the baby steps are necessary if they’re going to finish the marathon in 20 years. (metaphor intended)
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 11 years ago
Forty years from now, Delta won’t have any trouble remembering what she did instead of going to the prom. It’s all recorded in the daily diary she keeps, titled “Today’s New Reasons To Feel Good About Myself”.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
- Delta will get asked -Here’s what I’ve been envisioning. Delta gives Bernice a list of things to buy for the family. She goes shopping to get the food and other things, and on the way, bumps into Luann and Rosa who are shopping for prom dresses.-They ask Bernice about the prom and she talks about doing more important things, suggesting that Luann and Rosa are being shallow. Luann and Rosa end up feeling guilty and sad, and talk about how maybe they are being shallow.-Meanwhile, Bernice keeps calling Delta for more info about what time the dinner will be, can she get a ride, etcetera, but gets no answer. She goes out to buy something else, and runs into Delta. Delta, accompanied by some really good looking guy, is shopping for a prom dress….
ACTIVIST1234 almost 11 years ago
CROSS-STRIP ALERT: Coincidentally, check out “Candorville” today about the importance of “firsts”— such as “first prom”. Some are best forgotten, if they can’t be avoided.

“no where my wife works. Strictly on a rotating basis. and they get PAID.”^My wife also has that situation, and is also paid for it, but it is only because the admin would have to pay them… if the teachers had their choice, they’d just as soon opt out (those who can), and leave it to those who’d do it (since it’s extra money being dangled out)… – So the bottom line is, though it’s paid, it doesn’t mean that everyone there is “knocking down doors” to get the extra gig….
Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago
@JayBlue:
- if this were a real life person, it would end up that bunches of people are telling someone what to do, instead of seeing what they want to do… which is the thing that a lot of people agonize about, the fact that “such and such” keeps trying to say that only “x” is the right choice, and not always seeing the whole picture get painted-Well, I’m not sure what the whole picture here is, so I won’t even guess. But I try to be clear in what I say, and even so, people do end up interpreting what I’ve said as something other than what I meant.-When I asked why someone would think that ‘the school’ was pushing someone to attend a prom, I wasn’t thinking at all that they were referring to peer pressure. To me, if you use the words ‘the school’ along with words like ‘pressuring’ someone to do something, I think about the situation we have in Florida, where kids are required to take certain written exams in order to advance to the next grade.- And this requirement has gone so far as to insist not only that developmentally disabled kids have had to take the exams, but also a child who is dying of cancer and is in hospice.-So, in other words, when someone writes that ‘the school’ is pressuring someone, I don’t automatically think of this as peer pressure from other students. I automatically think of it as official action by the institution called ‘the school’.-What I said earlier is what I still believe. If someone doesn’t want to go to a social event like a prom, they shouldn’t have to. But if someone does want to go, they should not be made to feel guilty or selfish for wanting to have fun on one night, because they can do good works on many other nights.

Here’s whats going to happen. Most of the main cast is going to get suckered in by Delta who will use some passive aggressive tactic to force them in feeding a needy family and through some contrived circumstance or other they will end up holding a ‘prom’ or dance for the needy families who, according to Greg Evans, all dress as if they are all homeless or just came off the streets or loacl crackhouse

So….Bernice is NOT going to her senior prom…like some posters said the other day, there’s time enough for doing good for the needy. However, there’s only One time you get to go to your senior prom… Bernice, make your Own memories, let Delta do her thing, and you do Your thing and wear that fabulous dress and have a good time with your friends! ;)
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Speaking for myself, I had lots of memories with my friends, some in school, some outside of school… The kind of parties I have been to, formal and non formal, had bunches of fun and memories… but did those memories have to come on a certain day ?…. – What makes a prom?… that is the question… – If you were a type of person who never got to go to many parties, then perhaps this is prom to you… – If you were a person who never got to wear “formal attire”, take pictures or ride in a limo, maybe this is prom to you… – Through my school years, I got to do those things in abundance…. (some in school, some out of school)… the prom isn’t just because a school says you can dance in a venue they allow you to dance in, and all of the other things I mentioned.. a prom can be something you do, when you decide… if it was held on some other day, would it be less enjoyable?… What was the last gathering/social event you chose to go to.. was it less enjoyable than any school dances?… What about, say, a festival on a cruise ship?… Or a concert?… Or some other function?….– If someone goes to prom, they go… if they don’t, they don’t… either is a choice… but a good time is not defined by title alone… if a school didn’t hold a prom, and a bunch of kids got together and held their own, would that be less of a prom, because of not being “officially sanctioned” or because of some other thing?… It’s about what we make it… if you are a person who enjoys what you do, you can make your own kind of fun … you can throw you own party, and it can be as “fancy” as you want, or as “simple” as you want… – So the question is, what makes a prom?… more so, the question is, what is a prom?…
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
That’s why I said:
-“Familiar last name, but an unfamiliar face… (probably developed the same way as the Shannon Daytona/Shannon Lewis “goof/non-goof”)….” – It’s just in name only,, but it could be like the Shannon Daytona/Shannon Lewis thing….

This is the strip from 7/25, of last year. Ms. Manezon is just introduced to the DeGroots. If she was the art teacher, it would have been likely that through PTA conferences, that they had met. But There was no “You look kinda familiar…”dialogue. Or gag.
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
This is from 11/15/92. Though in a general way, she has similarities, it is different from the portrayed mannerisms of “Drama” Manezon. Even with 20+ years.

It’s possible Les could hurt her, but I’m thinking Bernice might somehow be able to reach out and touch whatever goodness the guy might have. She doesn’t strike me as someone who’d be intimidated by him. Well, we’ll all find out soon enough, but I found it interesting that Les already asked Rosa to the prom, so he’s obviously not against the concept.

seismic-2 Premium Member almost 11 years ago
> Yeah, Bernice could give Les the honor of taking her. However if that happens and he ends up hurting her,>Hurting her, how? She falls in love with him after that one date (Bernice is sort of prone to extremes), but he never asks her out again? Or he tries to coerce her into a more intimate relationship than she is willing to engage in? Or he plays a nasty trick on her at the Prom, causing her to go all “Carrie” on everyone there?

So the two ladies were members of the Manezone family? Maybe they changed the spelling from the “Manson family”, for obvious reasons.
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 11 years ago
You can feed the poor any day, and maybe Delta does that regularly. But Prom Night is Delta’s biggest opportunity to feed the poor, because she sees it as her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be nominated for Sainthood on account of it!
