Don’t forget the scientific calculator, graphing calculator, extra pencils and pens for when you lose or loan yours, erasers, scantrons, laptop, energy drinks, keys, student ID, health insurance card, driver’s licence, chapstick, extra maps for the lost on-campus visitors who ask you for directions, cellphone, reusable water bottle, tissues for you and your sniffly neighbor’s nose, sunglasses and sunscreen for the long walks between classes, and whatever else your teacher wants you to print out for class that day.
Optional: jacket, snacks, umbrella, and allergy medication.
A cute purse will not work, a durable backpack with plenty of pockets will.

Maybe where you live, but here, we still have good old-fashioned paper textbooks. If we have the electronic books you speak of, I haven’t heard about them, but then again, turning 45 in 19 days, I’m somewhat old-school. : )

Why do I get the feeling that Luann will be no more dedicated to her studies at Pitt CC than she was at Pitt HS?
KG1 over 10 years ago
Although hers is too small, Luann is following the popularity of messenger bags for practicality and security I see on my college kids campuses. I’m told many just wear them all the time so they won’t be left or stolen with their electronics, etc.

At last, Luann is preparing for college! The question now is, for how long? If she treats college like high school, it may not be very long at all…

This semester all I carried with me was my tiny notebook, a mechanical pencil, and my iPad. Now I have a pocket on the back of the iPad to stuff all that into to make it easier.

My thinking exactly. My son does most of his college work on his laptop – which goes with him everywhere on campus. It also holds most of his textbooks.
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
The text books are no more. Many texts today are Kindle files, or are supplied on CD-ROMs or must be downloaded. Homework must be turned in by e-mail so the teachers can check for plagiarism.
Like I say, what I would have done for the Internet and for electronic text media back in those days. Just makes everything so much easier. “Highlighting,” note summaries, all ot it. Not having to schlepp all those books to/from every place. And the “Word processing….” not having to hand type (i.e. with mechanical type writer) all those term papers and essays…. spell checkers…. a God send!
Although…. I wouldn’t be so sure about this “auto correct” thing…. 8-PPPP

don’t forget the ubiquitous slide-rule … always had one along ( calculators were for the rich kids, and usually the HP-35 using reverse polish notation )
HP-65 in my generation. :-) And, yes, it still had “postfix” entry/notation. Although we were not allowed to use them during exams. All we were permitted was a simple “4-function” cacluator (Add, Sub, Mult, Div) and that was it. And everyone had to have one or the test couldn’t be designed for it. My college tests were not designed for them… even the Gen. Chemistry tests.

Before we took my oldest to college this past weekend, I told her about Luann going to college too after all these years I’ve been reading it. She sat down to read a few and thought it was a hoot. She too is using a new laptop and downloading her text books. She looked at me crosseyed when I asked about paper books. Since all her work will be on the computer, I asked her to please save everything to the cloud and a storage device in case of theft or damage. @ReallyBad2 – trust me, looking cool is essential to new college students, but they can be prepared as well.

Talk about “recording lectures…”
I wonder now what professors do in this age of the “Go Pro” body cam. Of course, some professors don’t permit their lectures to be recorded for “copyright” reasons. Some said it was OK to record audio, but were concerned that we wouldn’t get the substance of the lecture without recording what was drawn on the chalk boards (they were just getting around to “white boards”). Now, one can just stick a lipstick cam in a hat (or even a Go Pro) and no one would be the wiser…. Of course, you also need time to review what you recorded, but….

As someone who has taught at the professional school level for many years here are my observations: Most teaching today is via PowerPoint. The good students also take notes, but the mediocre/poor students just highlight and try to memorize the PowerPoint printouts the night before the exam.
The best students take notes and then rearrange and rewrite them into a format that they can study for the exam. This requires thinking and processing the information in their own heads. The difference is simply one of active learning versus passive learning.

In any school, I remembered what matters to me and not what doesn’t. I wonder if this current vision she has of her “getup” will be what she actually finds doable. I was in school in a far different time.

As someone who went back to again college in my 50’s I can tell ya Luann is in for a very rude awakening! 2 back packs full of books, (no not all textbooks come on kindle yet) Comfortable tennis shoes for Running between classes. College campuses are BIG. Snacks cause you won’t have time for lunch. Water bottle NOT optional. Tablet or notebook, depending on your budget. Scientific calculator. Graphing paper. Yes, its required.2 or 3 notebooks, college ruled (?) who cares just anything I can scribble on.And the list grows from there. I rarely saw any student dress up, any who were serious about being there wore ratty old jeans and shirts, makeup optional.

My profs couldn’t care less if you used a calculator, as they were less interested in the exact numerical answer ( one said to round off Pi to 3) as they were showing the steps in understanding how to solve the problem. But that’s the diff. between physics and engineering I guess. Even had open book tests quite often, as they figured once you learned the basic formulas ( e.g. F=ma; a=dV/dT, V=dX/dT, etc) a calculator wouldn’t really help you the way they worded and structured the test questions.
Precisely. My Integral Calculus prof. always wanted us to “set up” the integral, but not to “evaluate” it. No need to. The setup was what he wanted to see.

Thank you for the warning about the cloud. That is something I didn’t know. I’m not sure, but she may know how to encrypt her work. Does that make sense?
It may help, but as Miyagi always told Daniel – “Best block… Don’t be there.”
I know people are big on cloud services and storage, and it certainly facilitates sales of tablets and smartphones, but I prefer to DIY and look after my own storage. At least I know my data are safe. And it isn’t really all that greater an effort.
I’ll check out Jen Lawrence. : )

Anybody else annoyed that we’re just getting half a story lately? We never found out what happened to TJ, if he defrauded the insurance company or not. "At least I know my data are safe. " … until your hard drive crashes ( survived 2 of those … one at the last second), your USB flash drive goes dead ( happened a few times too), or your computer gets stolen or hacked. Best not to put all one’s eggs in any one basket.
Oh, I have several different baskets – just none with any “public access” or any chance for it.
and learn how to use a good data encryption program!
That, I have. ;-)

As a college professor, I would say having a computer is the single most important college item. Everything is submitted electronically and professors use internet classroom to teach lessons, give grades, and everything else. Students go to this internet classroom for homework assignments, for assignments, and to send professor an email. Some textbooks have gone electronic so Kindle or Kindle app is another important college item to save money and on bulky carry-ons. I still see students carry backpacks but I also see students’s attempts to be “fashionable” and carry their college items in large crossbody bags or large leather or nylon purses.

“Re: reverse polish notation”.Reverse Polish notation calculators were far and away the best calculators, far superior to most of what is common..I remember borrowing an HP 45 from a neighbor for some chemistry lab work. She started to tell me it was different from most calculators..“I know how to use a calculator.”A few minutes later, I was back at her door.“Where is it?”“It doesn’t have one.”.We were talking, of course, about the EQUALS sign..For the unenlightened:punch in a numberpress ENTERpunch a second numberthen tell it what you wanted the second number to do to the first numberYou instantly had your answer and it was ready to use that number as desired. It kept a running tally of your numbers and was ready for the next calculation..In class a professor would set up a problem and call on the class to give him the answer.Classmates would be punching away on their Texas Instruments calculators..After a while I would pull out my HP 21.Often, just as I had the answer one of the others would declare the answer..Sometimes they were even RIGHT..If I nodded my head, the rest would stop punching. If I shook my head, the rest would continue to seek the correct answer..Later I got an HP-11C, used it several years overseas, came home, occasionally loaned it to smarter students when I substituted in an algebra or trigonometry class..Some years even later, the battery finally died. I need to replace those batteries (just for old times’ sake) even though they cost more than a modern scientific calculator.

Yep, wet clay tablets were a BIG improvement other than wiping your answers if you weren’t careful.

TORAD_07 posted what I use. I try to keep the images at less than 305 in width so it is not too large.
And @Dave53 also quoted:
and please don’t forget to add a width=“300” or similar statement within the < > symbols, to keep the size reasonable!
For regular graphics, I can agree. But I the strips deserve a little latitude. We can, however, keep them “small sized” as opposed to the “large size.” :-)

Additional note: you cannot post images here directly from your computer. If you have personal images, you have to first upload them to an image hosting site (like Photobucket) then insert the image’s URL.

LOL, I must have missed it as I have been kind of in and out the last several days. It’s been a weird weekend, but am curious…
You must not watch the MSM. It’s been there, and totally viral on social meda, etc. The FBI is all over it now. The people who hacked in and distributed the pics (if caught) will pay, dearly. As could, I think, the public cloud service that let it happen (the celebs will go after them). I trust the cloud provider had them sign “disclaimer” agreements (i.e "we are not responsible for the security of the content you put on our service… use of it is at you own risk).
FTR, I agree that what the hackers did is wrong, and they should face swift justice for doing it. But I also think there has to be a bit or “personal responsibility” here. If one chooses to use such a public cloud service, one should do the “risk/benefit” calculation and evaluate that result. And, for celebs/VIPs, the risk of an attack is a whole lot greater.

For at least the first 4 semesters, never buy the textbooks until you’ve gone to at least a week of classes – basically the idiotic “let’s read the syllabus and introduce ourselves!” class, and one actual class for each course. 95% of the time, you don’t need the books. If you’re going to a community college, that bumps up to 99.99% of the time. Then, when you know what books you actually need, get digital versions. You can highlight, make notes on specific passages, it’s searchable, and you can have all of your books with you all of the time.

“My car is almost 9 years old, 115K miles”
That’s not high mileage on most cars. With proper maintenance, most will last at least twice that.
Define “Proper maintenance.” I know things will start to go. Breaks have already been done, it;s ion it;s 3rd set of tires already Which have heen re-aligned. I fear the exhaust system wlll be next to go. The under body has rust from the chemicals they spray on the roads during the winter. But the oil is changed every 5K miles or there abouts, And I do things as needed. I know I;m going to have major things go wrong, soon. The engine has done well, but little things will need to be fixed. I’ve alreay changed transmission/transaxle fluids at 100K miles, as recommended.
We’ll see. Hopefully, we can keep it going for a while.
