Gunther's Mom: "Mr. Gray is just a friend, Gunthie. Look, you have friends here who want to talk to you!"
Friends: "Hi, Gunther!"
Gunther: "I'm coming home"
Just disappointed. No chance for Gunther to grow up, for Mrs. B to have a life other than being a Mom. Kind of what seems to be happening to Luann, even though she’s supposed to be going to Community College.
Of course, now the question will be if Rosa is going to be in tow, or if she will have some struggles to face in returning home… – And given their respective motivations for going, will they both now apply the “Jack Sprat Principle”? And further, will will they take Gunth for granted? And vice versa ?..
I really wonder why Mr. E chose to go in this direction. Thought we’d see if they were able to make a “turnaround”, at least. Makes me think that Gunther may be motivated by seeing everyone here like this, as opposed to “making his way” down there….
( Sportymonk:) “Love Dennis Yoest and the Classic IV. What song was that?” ^(me:) Wow, that’s a nice encounter! – That was “Strange Changes”. I found it on vinyl, but on a DY/C4 hits compilation album. I definitely am sure that it’s from their first (called Spooky) or second (called Mamas and Papas/Soul Train) albums, so if you happen to find the CD/Album, or run across that song, that’s the one! – And to take a listen, here it is via Youtube. (or cut and paste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSsmVeojKS4) – And as a bonus, a clip of a “live” (TV performance) version of “Stormy”! (8^D)
“Leavin’ On Your Mind”“Nothing But A Morale Victory”“Change Of Heart”“Homecoming?” “Nothing New In Peru”“Keep Your Ends Close, And Your “Lima’s Bean Rough” “Not Peruvian Your Mettle”or“Coming In With The Low Tide”
There are many who post here who insist that Gunther and Luann will eventually end up together, that this is the direction Evans has been going all along, as Gunther is based on Evans.-If this is his intent, I think Gunther returning at this time would be an epic fail. Luann would not see him as an ideal guy if he leaves Rosa and a potentially good job behind, just because his mother is dating…
if Gunther is coming to “block mr. Gray” I prefer that he stays in Peru, if he is coming back because he is not happy BEING IN PERU, than he should comeback……………….. but I would not be surprised if it is not just him that comes back, as Rosa was also unhappy, maybe even more than Gunther, she can come back and be part of Salvation Army or something like that
Well, I am sssoooo sleepy! Getting up before the sun does, doesn’t go well with me! LOL! Time to round up IS Katie and move both of us on up to bed! ’Nite all! ;)-—————————————————————“Experience teaches slowly, and at the cost of mistakes.” (J. A. Froude, 1818-1894)
Uh-oh. Has Rosa found herself a manlier man? Or is Gunther coming home just as an impulsive response to this particular situation? Or are both he and Rosa giving up on Peru? This announcement is so ominous, yet so ambiguous at the same time….
I think Rosa is the least of his worries right now. She has family there and in Peru. Wont matter if she stays there or comes for a visit. Gunther’s only concern is what his Mom brought Mr. Grey home for. She has been waiting all this time for Gunther to grow up so she can have a life of her own as well. To him, she is Mom…not a woman. He can’t handle her feeling about a man the way he does about Rosa.
Sorry folks… This “cliffhanger’s” just way too close to call. I’ll have to see how it plays out.
But my hope is that whichever way they go (either stay there or come home), that Gunther & Rosa stick together. Or that Gunther is only coming home “just for a temporary visit.” I think the fact that Gunther is so homesick right now and didn’t even mention Rosa is very ominous, but I could be (and hope I am) wrong.
I, too, am a bit partial to Rosa, as well. Whatever happens, Greg/Karen need to find a way for Rosa to stay in the picture. She’s too valuable a character to lose.
Sorry if I’m misremembering, but didn’t Gunther’s mother used to call him Gunny or something else besides ‘Gunthie’?I can’t believe Bernice isn’t at the ‘Gunther’ party.
Gunther’s wussing out.(Where are all these plane fare funds coming from? Maybe he’s going to sell off that wardrobe Sophia got for him and that he apparently rejected.)
Rosa’s dream derailed, but won’t leave. Gunther, being more practical, realizes that he must leave. Besides, after 4 or 5 months alone together, if they are still on a platonic level, something is sexually wrong and maybe Gunther finally realized it.
BS – Yep, Rosa alone is not a rock. And she’s probably left him already.*But Gunther, this is the time to man up. You don’t need a rock— you’re learning to fly! **Give it one more month, spend the holidays in Peru, then consider if you can make it a year!
The whole stated purpose of finally allowing the cast to age was so that new people and new situations could be introduced, to solve the problem of the strip’s growing “stale” due to being the same old same old, year after year. Yet now here we are, with the very same high school crew, and Gunther is about to re-join them. So unless something has happened to Gunther and Rosa in Peru that will shake things up dramatically (and of course possibilities abound!), then not only will Gunther’s big adventure have failed to make him less of a drudge, but the strip’s big “aging” development will have failed in its purpose, too. I therefore hope Gunther’s deciding to come back is due to something other than just homesickness.
The above comments are interesting, but I can never out guess what Greg does…..I’m always wrong. I don’t think that he will allow Gunther to be a failure, but the time frame of this strip is strange. Rosa said she wouldn’t run home almost 3 months ago, but that may have just happened a week or two ago in their time. Bottom line: I really can’t guess what is going to happen, or what “Plan D” is.
Rosa is probably too absorbed in her new environment and work that she is not really paying Gunther attention or giving him the time of her day. Rosa was going to South America with or without Gunther – it was never that Rosa was all that into Gunther to begin with.
The exciting possibilities would be that Gunther and Rosa got married and/or that Rosa is pregnant. It would also be interesting if Rosa quit her job with her uncle to do actual volunteer work with the poor in the mountains of Peru, and Gunther got left behind. I wouldn’t count on anything that game-changing, though. In spite of the “Letting the characters age” decision, the strip strives to maintain the old status quo.
Gunther’s returning to the strip. Is there any hope for Aaron Hill and mini-Elvis, or can they not escape from the black hole where they are held prisoner?
I don’t see where you are getting that conclusion from. She may have been protective in the past, but she encouraged him to go to Peru. And today she was telling him that Mr. Gray was just a friend. -I see Gunther as 100 % responsible for his own decision to come home. And I’m disappointed in him…
Disappointing! I also had one today; a creep I met on another site was contacting me on a more reputable one. I WILL find me a really good man, eventually.
Interesting Bernice isn’t there but Ox is. That being said I guess Greg’s little “We’re getting new characters” was just a one shot deal and this is just high school 2.0
The more I think about this, the more I believe Gunther is, simply reacting to either his mother’s “activity,” or the fact that he hadn’t seen those faces for a while. I don’t think this has anything to do with Rosa (at least right now). After all, they had Gunth on Skype for maybe 1-2 of the prior strips. Granted, Rosa was not on it, but I’d think that if there was an issue with Rosa, he’d have mentioned something before his mom got home.
Hopefully, next week is all about talking him out of it.
well, it’s obvious; Gunther went to Peru for all the wrong reasons; apparently Rosa hasn’t done anything to make him want to stay, and Mommies apron strings are long enough to stretch across continents and oceans.
Oh, and Gunther is a very sick young man who has a disturbing relationship with his mother.
Can anyone say “PSYCHO” and “NORMAN” in the same sentence and not see the parallels ?
His decision to come home was announced right after he saw his mother with a man she might be dating from work. In fact, she told him not to take such a demanding tone with her when he asked her if she knew what she was doing. Not my definition of ‘coddling’.-And also, a son who takes that kind of tone with his mother is acting very controlling, not like someone who has been coddled. I can see him coming home and ordering his mother to stop dating.-I hope I’m wrong about Gunther becoming a bully to his mother, but it’s something I’ve seen before.
