Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for May 23, 2015
May 22, 2015
May 24, 2015
Transcript:
Tiffany: "SO, what did Principal Purgus tell you?"
Luann: "He wants me to be lead teacher at the summer camp. But I have a conflict..."
Tiffany: "Oh, I know, Sweetie. But, hey, few of us have what it takes to be a systems facilitator, 'k?"
Tiffany actually seems to be concerned for Luannâs feelings, even though her way of showing is a bit condescending. I think the girl is growing up a bit.
So nice that she and Luann can be shown being civil with one another- but itâs funny how Tiffany doesnât yet know that her title may sound âglamorousâ and âup a rung on the ladderâ, but not the job (at least as far as how sheâll soon look at it), itselfâŠ

Yeah, letâs just have a story about something else next week! Maybe a discussion between Quill and Luann, which ends with Quill deciding to change his plans to stay with her, because he canât bear to be apart from her for ten days! That would be radical, at least.
Iâd still rather have a temporary job in an office than in a restaurant or retail, if I were in college. Itâs not so terrible. Kind of judgemental to say itâs so much worse than watching a few little kids and making sure they donât eat paste.
Tiffany is trying to be nice to Luann, bless her heart! Too bad sheâs rather a pea-brain. Luann, on the other hand, is prone to fits of jealousy and over-thinking simple situations. Lay off the Tiffster, Luann.
Tiffany isnât showing concern for Luann. Sheâs trying to rub her delusional âpromotionâ in Luannâs face. She just told her, âYou donât have what it takes â like I do.â And she didnât even register the part about Luann being asked to be lead teacher.
Well, itâs time for some terminally insufferable name dropping here at the Reuben awards weekend in Washingtion. The Tiffany booster club has the hotel surrounded and team Evans is defiantly shaking their fists at the angry throng. Police are expected to move the protesting mass to the Narional Mall where a yet unnamed spokesperson for Tiffany Rights will make what possibly could be the greatest speech since âI Have a Dream.â
What really bugs me about this strip is that Tiff is rarely ever seen in a good light. If the strip if going to evolve somewhat, (they graduating from high school, Brad and Toni are engaged etc) then why not have Luann or even Gunther call Tiff on her [bad] attitude towards people and maybe have her just explain why she does it.
Because Tiffanyâs âraison dâetreâ is to be a foil/antagonist to Lu. If Tiff were to mature to the point youâd like, sheâd serve no further purpose in the strip and would be written out, a la Delta, Arron, Rosa, etc., unless they can re-invent her character (e.g. she marries Gunther or something weird like that).
Iâm hoping Tiff does mature a little⊠but I also hope Tiff & Lu do keep at least a âfriendly rivalryâ between them throughout the life of the strip. It is interesting to watch them spar.
Two points1) This is why I admire Tiffâ no matter what the circumstance (event getting demoted), she can turn the situation to one where she is a winner. Whether itâs just spin or self-deception, I know not.*2) I hate being called âsweetieâ or âhoneyâ almost as much when it is done by another woman as by a man.
Not so happy with this Tiff demotion to utter dumbness. She used to run parties and events, showing determination and logistical skills. Through Gregg, I had hope for her. Not looking good. The boss man should be speaking honestly to Tiff about her failings so she can learn, change or progress. He had no right to comment on Tiff in front of Luann. I would expect Tiff to leave that dismal job prospect and go seek her fortune, for better or for worse. Yes, New York. There are some possibilities with real meat. Luann, meanwhile, continues to fall into her skill set with little ambition or direction. At least we see her cataloging her skills. Yes sheâs a good girl we all love. But will she just work at the local nursery at minimum wage. Or go on to stage and set design in the fast lane. No. I donât see that.
âWasnât there something happening with Gunther? Did that just fall by the wayside?â*JC â the way that arc was suddenly dropped makes even innocent me suspect they went far farther than they had planned. * If they had not, I think this current arc would be about their fighting to preserve their reputations.

Facilities Co:ordinator, or file clerk, is not a bad job for learning about the administrative side of education, which takes less intelligence than people skills, and pays better than teaching. Administration is better suited to her than teaching, which lots of people can do, and thus is why it pays so little.
âDoes everyone have this âGay sideâ and do Gays have a hetero side as well?â.Nah, we manly men are straight through and through and confident in our sexuality. The ones who worry about the sexuality of others are conflicted.
her boundless optimism that her new job will be an improvement over her old one.. . . . "-ââââââââââ-It could be. Remember her organizational skills.
Tiffany is trying to be nice to Luann, bless her heart! Too bad sheâs rather a pea-brain."âŠ..I believe itâs more naivete, rather than stupidity.. . . . . "-ââââââââââââDelusionalâ is what I have called it. She cloaks herself in a dream â that she is a superstar.
@cdgarDoes everyone have this âGay sideâ and do Gays have a hetero side as well? . . . "-ââââââââGroups of women have always bonded. Groups of men have always bonded. These close relationships made civilization possible. It need not have any physically sexual aspect at all. So the word âgayâ as currently used has no relationship at all.
Wasnât there something happening with Gunther? Did that just fall by the wayside?. . ."-You must be new here. Yes, rarely ever does a Luann story have a beginning, middle, and end. . . . "-âââââââââââThey used to. Really! .Consider Bernice and Derek. Consider Delta going to Washington. Consider Brad vs. Dirk. Consider Guntherâs âwardrobe malfunction.â Consider the stories involving Mrs. Horner. Consider TJ and Ann Eifel. Consider Aaron and Diane. Consider Miguel Vargas..Since Miss Evanâs arrived, they most often do not. She may have read that leaving things hanging can build suspense..It can..But skillful timing is necessary to use the ploy. Recently, hanging plots have been simply forgotten, or only returned to after all interest or logical sequence has been lost.
Tiffany channels the Marilyn Monroe stereotype. She is content to be a sex symbol that men canât resist, and should wear a sign that says, âFor Display Purposes Only.â But, she is so much more fun than Luann or Bernice. ya gotta love her.
1. Iâm not worried about Tiffany reading the files. Once she sees that there are no pictures of âcoot kittiesâ (to reference her wording back in salamander country) sheâll denounce them as boring and just file them away as required.
2. Talking about unfinished story arcs (hello Karen, this is for you) ⊠what are Crystal and Knute doing? We havenât seen them since Gunther got back. And why did we bother introducing the rest of the people in Berniceâs dorm, more than six months ago, if we arenât ever going to see them again?
I wish I had the opportunity to personally thank Mr. Greg Evans for his outstanding comic strip. I have laughed and have cried so many times as I followed each story line with the day to day interaction of his characters especially Luann and her family. I cannot wait to see if Luann goes to New York or stays with the opportunity to be the head teacher at summer camp. I remember characters that have disappeared from the cartoon. I miss Rosa especially. As a retired high school teacher I could relate to the trials and tribulations that these cartoon characters went through and I simply want to tell Mr. Evans how I have extremely enjoyed his humor. He is incredible and deserves an A+!!!!!!
Systems Facilatator? Tiffany, youâre going to be stuck filing papers while Luann and Quill have the time of their lives in New York City this Summer. Donât say that I warned you.
âToo bad so many are used to relatively instant comic strip gratification.â^Or "instant âreal lifeâ gratification (from tech to almost just about any other place)âŠ
