Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for November 12, 2016
Transcript:
Bernice: Ok, we're going bowling. you may join us. Luann: Just to hang out. Not a date. Jack: Bowling? meh. not my thing. We'll hit the gym. Later! Boy: Bye. Bernice: So are we disappointed or relieved? Luann: Depends. Do I have to go bowling with you now?

It appears Emo seems to be disappointed. He’s looking straight at Bernice and meekly saying “Bye”. Kind of like he was hoping those weak sparks they had between them might burst into a flame.

Is Nil even the working-out type? Jack certainly looks like it.
Flash Gordon about 8 years ago
Looks like the 2 males blew off the 2 females.
And bowling? Really?
æ² about 8 years ago
From the prospect of free dinner to rock climbing to bowling to now, probably, zippo. Nice going, Bern.

Looks like the old misdirection play to me, not on the part of the characters, although there were a lot of changes and implications, none of which happened in the end, but more on the part of Greg Evans. This arc seems to be not as significant as I might have thought, but does not seem to be as insignificant as it seems. Luann and Bernice were willing to consider hanging out with Jack and Nil/Emo, on their own terms, not Jack’s (Emo seemed willing to go along with whatever Jack stated) which is a good thing, but the whole point of this arc escapes me, other than to be a good interplay between Luann and Bernice, and a step back from the wedding run-up. Oh and we get a cameo of the Fuse, Pru, and TJ. Luannfar1212 out.

Crisis averted …?

By the way, I’ve engaged in a few recreational activities which could be described as “Not My Thing” in order to hang out with someone I might have an interest in, from time to time.
.
I think many people have.

I like Luann’s response, but there does seem to be an increasing rift between the two.
.
The young men responded in a polite and secure way.
.
I did notice that despite it all Nil is focused on Bernice.

The boys dodged a bullet that tme.

Jack had an exit strategy! No guy with any pride could say yes with the invitation framed that way. Luann & Berneice should sort it out on how to act like big girls. I really didn’t like Jack however.
dlkrueger33 about 8 years ago
That’s a good way to find out if guys are truly interested in you. If they really wanted to be with the girls, they would have said yes to ANYTHING. Glad this arc is ending. And again, I must say, bring back Aaron Hill…and have him be super interested in LuAnn, but this time, she feels nothing for him. Cool arc, right?

After a great deal of psycho babble analysis led by the 20% solution, once again much ado about nothing. You have hit on something – there are no interesting male characters in this strip. Most of them fade in and out and don’t contribute very much.

I thin Jack and Emo are a couple.

If Luann had use the word ’’date’’, then maybe Jack would’ve accepted.
Airman about 8 years ago
A simple lesson in arrogance. The rejectors became the rejected.
Airman about 8 years ago
The next logical step would be for Tiffany (who most guys might find intimidating) to embrace Gunther (who most girls might ignore).
Willywise52 Premium Member about 8 years ago
Looks like Luann’s disappointed and Bernice is relieved,as usual.

Sooooo, the “Gals” got ‘DUMPED’ by the Slugs, uh? Good. Now You know what would Really make this Day Complete? For these two Ladies to bump into Gunther at the next table, and HE tells THEM to Get Lost.
Airman about 8 years ago
This might also be a mini-metaphor for this past week’s election. The queens got dumped by a couple of deplorables.
jedicharlie57 about 8 years ago
I’m surprised the girls didnt notice how long it took them to debate, analyze and decide and then the guys took the new options and decidedly instantly. I remember learning that as a young girl, not EVERYTHING has to be analyzed or has an ulterior motive, just go with the flow when fun is involved
jrankin1959 about 8 years ago
Some things just take care of themselves.

That Bernice would ‘allow’ the guys to go with them should be off-putting enough for them to decline. Sheesh! Luann looks disappointed, Nil does too. Jack will take it in stride and possibly ask Luann for a get-together again. Luann should let Bernice have it with both barrels.
31768 about 8 years ago
So nothing happened, after all. (yawn….)
kaystari Premium Member about 8 years ago
So, the two guys do everything together? Maybe they are the ones dating!
Billskicker about 8 years ago
Luann is into mr. Muscle. If she was not, she would not have agreed to go bowling, which she apparently is not into

NG, Steve just mentioned an excellent Paul Grannis quote to add in your head to my very late post yesterday because it helps explain why i found the comments of the others interesting yesterday:
.
“Don’t chase anything that can only be found when you stop running”
dougsathome about 8 years ago
They could have said they were going shoe shopping. But bowling did the trick.
lkcelleo about 8 years ago
Bernice should be called “little miss no fun”.

æ²QUOTE. æ² said, about 2 hours agoKalkkuna“I thin Jack and Emo are a couple.” I fat that they aren’t. END QUOTE.
Interesting, there is plenty of imposing going on, but i had not thought of it as imadiposeing.
Night-Gaunt49[Bozo is Boffo] about 8 years ago
For me bowling is applied ballistics.
SukieCrandall Premium Member about 8 years ago
Oh, something i really liked was the shadowing of their hair when seen from the back. It focused attention on the guys behind them.
SukieCrandall Premium Member about 8 years ago
Airman, i am mentioning this because you might find it interesting. Yesterday was terribly busy around here (amd the day extended to about 3a) so i caught only part of his comments (a portion on the demographic split between pre-9/11 veterans and post-9/11 veterans), so will have to hear it myself to get the full message though inwas familiar w the result as a clump, and figured you might be interested in his full comments. He struck me as highly knowledgeable in what i saw.

I think Jack figured Luann is not interested in dating him and decided to decline the bowling suggestion. After all, Luann was going to have Bernice tag along, making it a group thing, and not so much a date, so he lost interest. Luann, thank Bernice although you never had any intention of going without her. I think Jack will stop bugging you and possibly settle for a friendship instead which is what you want.
capricorn9th about 8 years ago
I don’t think Jack is the right type for Luann. What I see is Jack settling for a friendship with Luann and start hanging out with her, and Quill sees them on campus, assumes he’s been replaced. Quill will be back, trying to get Luann away from Jack.
whiskerphonic about 8 years ago
bernice and luann are both self centered jerks.who would want to be with either of them.
locake about 8 years ago
Bernice seems to think any man would be lucky to have her, but she has very little to offer
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
1) “Meh” seems an odd thing for Jack to say. 2) I think Luann was ambivalent about going, so she let Bernice add too much structure. 3) Hard to see how this is going anywhere now unless Nil asks Luann for Bernice’s contact information.
SukieCrandall Premium Member about 8 years ago
Luann should go to the rock wall gym herself now or later to see if she enjoys it.
Night-Gaunt49[Bozo is Boffo] about 8 years ago
No it takes a back bone, hands, feet and women can do it too.
Sisyphos about 8 years ago
So long, good-bye, Jack ‘n’ Nil!
Bernice Party-Pooper seems pleased with herself. Luann’s attitude is rather more ambivalent. I think she’s missing the not-a-date that might have been….
stuartj12 about 8 years ago
Ah too bad. thoujght they were cute couples. Bernice (and some people here) are too uptight.

Honestly, Bernice and Luann are both pretty awful and unlikeable people. I’m not sure why anyone would want to date either of them. Most of the characters are pretty awful people, actually.Brad and Toni are OK, maybe a couple others, but I wouldn’t really want to be around most of them.
euvnrutas about 8 years ago
Yes sir re Bob. Definitely channeling Tiffany both of them now. Not good enough for the ordinary folks.

Ugh…indoor rock climbing would have been so much more entertaining/fun.

Bowling? That’s too white trash for me. See ya!
