The duplicitous smile on her face as the calculating old bag greets her son is beautifully done.
Lila will surely have gone up in Mrs Klein’s estimation, even if only grudgingly. And she addressed her as “Dear” – probably for Matthew’s benefit, but nonetheless evidence of greater engagement than previously. Lila has still shown no sign of fancying Matthew, but a Lila-Mrs Klein relationship would add an interesting dynamic.
Lila is always going to be poor. I would have taken the money and accepted his proposal anyway, then, if it didn’t work out, cashed the check. If it did work out, she’s ok there too. win/win
@SeaFox…you made me LOL at the office!!! Happy Friday! And if you’re a customer service rep who has to work weekends, may YOUR weekend come quickly and smoothly!
Lila, you can donate it to cancer research, better there than stagnating in mom’s account, or if feeling noble is the issue, it’s not as if the offer conflicts with your love interest.

$100K? A whole bunch of new shoes? Don’t those shoes with red fingernail polish on the soles start around $2000?
So it really isn’t that many shoes.
Congratulations Lila, you found some character.

If she loves him, she should marry him and they should move to the East Side, where they will be safe from intrusions by his mother.
