Dannae doesn’t have a political ideology - only her own self-interest. Her logic is, however, amusing. I may be wrong, but I think the teacher is enjoying this little exchange.

    Slightly off-topic, but… (Hey! A non-sequitur while discussing Non-Sequitur!)

…anyway. I missed the deadline to vote in the poll. Would’ve been nice if the deadline had been posted with the masthead “vote now” message. Even though I missed it, it would’ve been nice to see the finalist entries, but the polling site took them down. It would be especially nice not to still have the stupid “vote now” message up, days after voting closed.

Interesting how the ad to the right not only shows the current cartoon, but distorts it to look as though it is on the T-shirt.

keenanthelibrarian: “She doesn’t strike me as that conservative.”

cdward: “Danae doesn’t have a political ideology - only her own self-interest.”

And that makes Danae different from the modern American conservative movement… how???

Didn’t Calvin try this same idea back in the 90’s? Also, when did ignorance become a lifestyle choice? Girls with dark colored hair are against my cultural beliefs. Wiley I demand you make Danae a blond immediately.

Interesting. I thought the strip was a satire of the anything-is-okay-(except-conservatism) diversity ideology. Anything to avoid learning about calssical knowledge.

sigh Yay for conservative-bashing. It really spices up my holidays.

This mindset runs on both sides of the aisle…”I’m offended by what you’re saying because it runs counter to my own interests.” As exemplified by my professor this semester who considered racism, heterosexism, and capitalism to be the only social evils to teach about (being Asian, gay, and socialist) but poo-pooing anyone who mentioned religious freedom, the environment, or freedom of speech in a totalitarian government (since none of those infringed on him personally.)

Hey, if kids like Danae don’t want to learn and don’t try to learn, I say we blame her teachers. Evidently it’s never the child’s fault for not trying to do well in school………

You know, analyzing cartoons, or humor in general, takes all the fun out of them.

As Freud said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Grammar lessons are just formalizing what should/could have been already internalized. If you read a lot and listen to those who speak “standard English” you know the rules already.

Danae’s nominal attempt to inject culture into grammar makes me think of Howard Zinn, who somehow managed to combine two mutually irrelevant subjects in his textbook “Rethinking Mathematics: Teaching Social Justice by the Numbers.”

Not offending anyone is tough. I try the opposite philosophy: to be equal I must offend everyone. But for Wiley’s sake, I’ll keep my offenses to myself.

Great humor is based, by it’s very nature, on reality. Reality can be very serious. The more serious the reality the funnier the joke. Danae’s T-shirt makes fun of death, and that is actually pretty serious. Today’s comic jokes about kids trying their best not to learn. If we don’t discuss that serious topic, it just leaves pencil work, inking, graphics, perspective, coloring, etc. Even if a cigar is just a cigar, it’s still bad for ya…

They don’t want that new data, new technology, new legislation, or evolutionary theory, because it will interfere with their old “culture” of doing business and bilking the public, and their number is 1%.
