Our county started to outlaw the use of plastic grocery bags, but they didn’t have the votes. I wish they’d try, again. I try to use reusable bags, mostly cloth.
We always carry one of those insulated zipper bags in the car with three canvas bags tucked inside. Still amazes me how many plastic bags we still end up with to take back to recycle at our local Meijer store. Kohls takes them too.
I don’t know anybody who throws their trash in the closest river. The problem with pollution comes from third world countries where they do. So, the solution is all the virtue signaling by first world types, it is working to help third world countries to raise their standard of living.
I still don’t know which is better for the environment: plastic bags, made from petroleum or paper bags, which take a lot more fuel to transport. I’ll use my totes, and, if needed, plastic bags are good to line my bathroom trash cans.
I like to sew my own shopping bags and make them for friends and clients that I do alterations and mending for as well as garments I’m commissioned to make.
I thought plastic bags were a horrible idea when stores first started using them and sadly it turns out I was right. I have a plethora of reusable totes that I use for my shopping and have used them for several decades.
these plastic bags were put forth as ‘less waste’ at the checkout we were asked ‘paper or plastic?’ when countermen in the stores took pride in how they packed your bags..we used the grocery bags for school book covers, and saved the Sunday funnies to make kites with.
I used reusable shopping bags all the time, until the pandemic hit and I started using self-checkout all the time. Gotta find a way to restart using the reusable ones …

To me, magnificent whales and whale sharks caught in fishing nets, and struggling to stay alive is most heart rendering to see!!!

Use cloth bags for your groceries and stuff, and when you can’t avoid a plastic bag, use it as a trash bag.

Cloth bags are breeding grounds for some nasty germs. We use the plastic bags to bring stuff home, then reuse them for diapers and/or trash.

I repurpose grocery bags into trash bags, or at least the ones without holes.
