Try selling it as a beauty treatment, Louie.

    Good morning, crew!

I wonder how good those mind reading poodles are? Can they still read Louie’s thoughts in the second panel when they are some 10 feet away and their heads are turned away?

Must you actually make eye contact to read minds? (Because I remember some TV show back in the 1970s where the “Amazing Kreskin” could read audience member’s minds from the stage where he was some 30 feet away!)

“Poodle” comes from a German verb “pui-del” meaning “to splash”. Poodles were originally retrievers who retrieved fallen birds from water. Nowadays, they are seen as pampered pets as today’s strip shows.

We had Standards growing up, and we lived near a salt water marsh. Believe me, a poodle left to his own decisions is anything but a frou-frou dog.

Those poodles don’t know what they are missing. Sure, I wouldn’t want to be Nate giving Louie a bath when he gets back to the ship but Louie’s politeness is refreshing.

Is that a purebred poodle with a poodle cut or a cocker spaniel -poodle mix with a cock-a-doodle do?

The poodles are polite too — “Maybe next time”! All part of why we all want to live in Overboardland.

As the one time owner of a poodle (she died of old age some 2 decades ago) I have to strenuously object to this blatantly false stereotype today. Jo Jo would GLEEFULLY jump into a mud puddle, especially right after being groomed.A dog is a dog. The minor cosmetic changes hoomans create in them and call pure breeds do not change the basic dogness of them. And may it never!

I led off a children’s sermon on baptism with the question, “Do you ever play in the mud?” The girliest girl in the bunch (still a fashion plate as a 16-y.o. soprano in the choir) screeched “No!”

While it is true that they may want to, the courtesy demonstrated by these dogs is water on the desert! THANK YOU, Mr. Dunham! And to those who are just positive that they want to jump in, not all dogs are water and dirt fans. We have a BCxKing Charles mix who is Mr. Precious Paws and will sit on the bench on the deck rather than go into even dewy grass. sigh.

My first dog (as an adult) was an oversized miniature poodle. One time I took him to Roosevelt Island, which is in the Potomac River, and the trail ran a bit too close to the water. Suddenly, he was on his back, rolling in what turned out to be a dead fish. Not a prissy poodle, that one!
