Makes me wonder, if she really doesn’t “understand math AT ALL”, then how does she know that there are 3 other problems before the 4th problem? Would she even understand what the symbol 4 before the question, means four? Maybe she just used her fingers and counted the rows of questions. One, two, three, four. But wouldn’t that prove that she knows enough math to count up to four correctly?
Our Miss Patty is struggling with math. When I was in tech school, studying electronics, I had to learn much, much math. There were lots of derivatives and integrations, all, no doubt, useful knowledge to be applied in my field. But, decades later, I took a gander at a new high school textbook. Man, now I know what they mean by new math. I couldn’t figure out that book at all. It looked to me that in the process of making the text more interesting, they made it totally incongruous, too.
Given the original date of this strip, it seems an unlikely scenario, as even the public schools back then were not into social promotion as schools are these days.
I hope this 1969 appearance – previously shown in 2005 and again in 2016 – isn’t replacing any POLITICALLY INCORRECT 1975 Peanuts strips – like the Marcie football situation or maybe any of the 2 Bicentennial related Peanuts strips from towards the end of 1975!
When i was in my senior year in HS In my first calculus test I was clearly having problems. I took each problem to point X and got stuck. clearly I’d missed a step so waited until after the class and went up to the teacher hoping he’d explain to me the missing step.
He looked at me and said “what are you stupid?”and suddenly the bugs bunny switch in my mind flipped. I balled up the paper, tossed it in the bin grabbed his hand in both of mine, shook it vigorously saying “Well, goodbye! and don’t think it hasn’t been a little slice of heaven. because it hasn’t!”
I walked down t my councilor’s office and said ‘get me the hell out of that class.’ After i explained what had happened I was moved. The teacher was retired at the end of the year so I may not have been the only issue.
I think there’s a rumor that a week of 1969 Peanuts strips may be running instead of 1975 Peanuts strips this December 5-10, 2022 week (along with these other Andrews McMeel strips being in rerun weeks that same December 5-10, 2022 week: Big Nate, Marmaduke, Born Loser, Real Life Adventures, Moderately Confused, Off The Mark, Brevity, Jump Start, Pooch Cafe, Red and Rover, Baldo, Grand Avenue, Lio, Duplex, Flying McCoys, DeFlocked, Betty, Grizzwells, La Cucuaracha, Rip Haywire, Ziggy, Overboard, Luann, Rose is Rose, Phoebe and Her Unicorn, and maybe Pickles): The outage at GoComics.com that happened for a few days before the Thanksgiving holiday possibly?
I managed basic arithmetic. I even coped with basic algebra. Calculus baffled me. Luckily, I had a cousin who was a math whiz kid who was kind enough to help me muddle through. But it was a tradeoff. While he could solve complex equations, literature completely baffled him and I could assist him negotiate questions of poetic license, author’s intent, literary analysis and the like. Oddly enough, we still like each other some half a century later. 8>)
At least sh admit’s it. The irony is if the teacher were to ask her to calculate a player in a paticular sport’s statistics for a season then she could do so even better than Marcie could do long division.

Honest assessment is the first step in progressive improvement…i would say the teacher has some work to do, as does Patricia!
