My fourth grade teacher did that. It’s one thing to call on the kids without their hand up to answer a question to embarrass them. But she NEVER called on us who did have our hand up and it got discouraging. I decided to stop putting my hand up and let her think I didn’t know the answers and eventually she did call on me and I gave the right answer. She looked a bit disappointed.
PP, you’d do swell in today’s Gov. Ed. Public schools: No wrong answers; everyone gets an equity grade; real subjects like Math & History are considered racist. Yeah .. explains a lot!
I remember my daughter’s third-grade teacher complaining about this. The teacher always called on my daughter when she had a book hidden in her lap reading during a lesson. My daughter always knew the answer.
Because some teachers like embarrassing their students. Once, my freshman algebra teacher put a problem on the board and called on me to solve it. He could see that I didn’t know the answer, so he said “Guess”, in such a way as to embarrass me, and it worked.

I suspect PP listens to the teacher with about as attention as she pays to Marcie. That is to say, ziltch.
