Dakota was formed as a territory in 1861 which included present day North and South Dakota plus most of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. There was a separate war with the Sioux Indians in the Dakota territory that coincided with the US Civil War.

It was a war between the farmers and the industrialists. Both sides lost, and both sides won. Does that answer your question, Pig? It doesn’t? You’re more confused than ever? Welcome to the US of A.

Civil war is a misnomer. It was the War of Secession. It would have been a Civil war if the South had tried to conquer the North.

Well, the thing I find remarkable is how they managed to fight nearly all of the Civil War battles at national parks. Revolutionary War battles, too.

The Seven-Years’ War (1755-1764, which isn’t seven years) had battles in Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia, so shouldn’t it be considered a World War? It is known as the French and Indian War here in the States and our friends to the north call it the War of Conquest.

Isaac Asimov once pointed out that only one state or colony has ever been designated as “East,” namely, East Jersey Colony, along with West Jersey.

The only other East/West divided state I can think of offhand is East and West Germany—which have since been reunited.

SP, i will have to look up if you grew up in the tristate. (Any chance of a relationship w Teddy? She and i grew up going to Setauket School and ELVHS more decades ago than i think you have been in the world.) Yes, southern NJ was and remains more midatlantic while northern NJ is and remains closer in ways to NYC and New England, and that division did show up in some split sympathies around the time of the Civil War.
