Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for August 01, 2015
Transcript:
Mom: I've painted a picture of you. Marigold: No... You have painted areas AROUND me, leaving a blank space in the SHAPE of me. Mom: Well, you're the same color as the paper. Marigold: I DEMAND to be made of paint! Mom: how did those medieval tapestry makers put up with unicorns? Marigold: That job did have very high turnover.

So, Dana, what shade of white do you use when painting Marigold?

Phoebe seems not to care. Playing a shooting game on her phone apparently.

Agreed Unicorn.

One could argue that there are areas on the painting that needed a little more detail, like the eyes and those oh so heavenly nostrils. Then again, its possible that they are there but we didn’t see them because the comic is too low definition.

This is kind of the problem I’ve been having in re-painting my inside walls; some of them are white, and I’ve been putting down white oil-based primer before actual painting. Makes it hard to tell what I’ve done!

At least she didn’t paint Marigold in a snowstorm.

The white paper I can understand, but shouldn’t there be some shading to give Margiold a little dimension

Uniform Unicorn.

Various features create shadows that would appear as shades of gray. I paint a lot with India ink washes.
