We have silos in our town near the railroad tracks dedicated to grain shipping. Also many, many birds nearby. That grain is for that all natural, probiotic, high fiber granola.
Having driven across the flat, flat land of North Dakota, I can attest to the fact that the tallest building in a lot of towns there IS the grain elevator… you can see them up to 5 miles out (because I checked, out of boredom). :-)

In my mom’s hometown (current population 1,344) the grain elevator wins. Back when she lived there, the population was about 500. It was a SMALL town (couldn’t make the font smaller, so went with emphasis instead!) LOL

Reminds me of Welfare Square of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints… although the Church Office building is much taller than that.

The tallest building in my home town was built in 1928, the town never really recovered from the Depression.

In Italy a church steeple is still highest point in town. Love how towns were built around church.

Another alternative is the water tower, especially for towns that weren’t along the railroad.

Or the county hospital.

ours was the church that set on the border of the two villages in NY. But only because it was at the top of the hill. :-)

Carpio, ND. Originally a mail car on a siding that was the Territorial Post Office. . You sent your mail to Car, P.O., Dakota Territory.

We don’t live in wheat or grain country so the tallest building is the local hospital three stories. Or maybe now the Native American hotel.
