Growing up in my large suburban town, with it’s very large volunteer fire department, in the pre-IM/texting/pager/mobile phone era – they had sirens on utility poles all over the place, which would sound long-short codes for what fire company should assemble. (I’m sure lots of towns were similar) Believe me, you couldn’t mute THOSE alerts!
