I have mentioned before – certainly on Fred Basset and also probably on this strip – that my Fred Basset merchandise as a boy in the UK in the 1970s included a Fred Basset pencil case. I was still using it at high school in the early 1980s.
Play a game called “ Dogs around the world “. Get a globe, spin it, then point to a country. Rover, then could tell you about all of the different kinds of dogs from that country. Talking about fun/ interesting!
My kids wore Buster Brown shoes from the time they were toddlers through grade 8. At school, saddle shoes for girls, brown lace-ups for boys. I still have a little Buster Brown box from one of their pairs of shoes!
This must be the one and only year Red gets Hush Puppies. Parents always learned after the first pair never to buy a kid Hush Puppies because it only took a week of recess for the to be Bald Puppies as the soft exterior was worn off.
For a brief time, the advertising slogan was “Hush Puppies are dumb,” which I kind of liked but which understandably didn’t boost sales in the way that must have been hoped for.
It’s true that Basenjis can’t bark, but that doesn’t mean that they’re silent. I knew a lady who had one. It could make these chortling sounds that sounded kind of like laughter.

At Red’s age we had Red Goose Shoes and the all time favorite PF Flyers with the decoder ring.

Oh, oh… Rover is concerned about his cousins and his own skin.

I can’t hear “hush puppy” without thinking of the late puppeteer Shari Lewis.

I remember wearing Keds.

Finally has pants that fit! I kind of remember Hush Puppies being out of style by the late 60s; showed water stains if they got wet.

I love Rover’s ears over his eyes—in yesterday’s strip, too. Thanks for that charming detail, Brian.
