Agatha Christie is well known to have used a Remington Portable and wrote many dozens of detective stories, well over a hundred if you count all her works. You go try to write that much in the bathtub with a tablet while eating apples and tell me if that bit makes any sense.
Blind snakes are burrowing snakes that live under ground most of the time. Living that way, they have no need for sight, and the group of blind snake species have greatly diminished eyes and are functionally blind. They mostly eat small insects and therefore have tiny mouths.
The owl parents are actually bringing the snakes to their babies as food, and some of them will escape and, as burrowing animals, will bury themselves in the owl nests. Most bird’s nests are breeding grounds for lice and other parasites… which the snakes do eat. But if baby owl is hungry and spots one of the snakes. Well, snake = snack.
Also… This is the second day in a row where parthenogenetic animals are mentioned [the aphid was the one mentioned yesterday] as female blind snakes are able to produce offspring without mating with a male snake.
Coincidence? Or did the artist/writer get the idea for this feature about owls and blind snakes while researching parthenogenesis for yesterday’s cartoon?
they left out that it’s a specific breed of snake, the Texas blind snake that they use…I had visions of the owls flying around looking for snakes wearing dark glasses with seeing eye beetles…interesting aside, back when I was married, my ex-wife’s niece was declared legally blind; the state even provided a seeing eye dog for her and the state, (oh Florida, of course), allowed her to keep her driver’s license!!…so she would drive to grocery store, park in handicapped space, and get out with her dark glasses and seeing eye dog
sounds like that was some hardcore Egyptian guy, “yeah, I know some people are buried with cats, but I’m gonna go into the afterlife with a pair of baby LIONS, that’ll show Anubis whose boss!” Also this is how I learned that screech owls and blind snakes are both things.

Those owls are truly wise to do something like that.

One was said, the other was known and the third was discovered.

Well, in Ms. Christie’s case, wherever and whenever the Muse calls, the artiste must answer; else one might lose the inspiration.

that is an example of a symbiotic relationship. Hopefully, after the snakes serve their purpose, they don’t become lunch for the chicks.

Why blind snakes, and how can the owls tell if they are?

This past fall, I built an Eastern Screech owl nesting box. If I get one, I’ll check that out and report back.

How often do those owls find blind snakes? And how would they know they’re blind?

Do we really want “is said to have written” in a site that purports to present facts? The fact would be “…Agatha Christie wrote her murderous….”
