In some cases, that chemical can get on a live ant, and its coworkers will just keep dragging it to the corpse pile no matter how many times it crawls out, until it loses the smell. They’ll believe the scent even if the “dead” ant fights back when they try to move it.

A similar phenomenon is an “ant mill”, where ants will end up following each others’ scent trails in an endless loop, even to the point of dying from exhaustion unless something interferes.

I was under the impression that all living creatures give off a stench (chemical) when they die.

From what I have seen on TV, long dead humans also seem to emit a horrendous odor.

Well if odors are chemicals then we direct others to dispose of our bodies when we die, too.

I lived near a goat farm once. It was very weird to hear them cry out, “Help!”, especially when they hadn’t been milked on time.

In 2018, at a time of day when it was closed, employees at a marine mammal center in Hawaii were receiving calls from there. But, when they answered the phone, no one said anything. One of them went in and found a gecko was on one of the phones. The phone had a touch screen that reacted to the gecko’s feet.

What about uncles?

Gross but the smell of froot loops cereal apparently mimics the dead ant smell. They will either move the cereal to their graveyard, or start a new graveyard where they find them.
