I lost my Dad twice. First to Alzheimer’s. Then several years later he finally fell asleep. It was very tough to watch the body you knew, but without the mind that went with it, and still try and take care of him. But at least he is resting in peace now. The moral of the story is: Do what you can with your Dad while you can. For time doesn’t stop for anyone. Nor can you do any do-overs. Time marches on.

I lost two dads. The one who helped put me on this earth and the other that adopted me.

    Happy Father’s Day

Build the memories while you can.

    Cat’s in the Cradle, 1974

“But it’s sure nice talking to you, dad

It’s been sure nice talking to you

And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me

He’d grown up just like me

My boy was just like me

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon

Little boy blue and the man in the moon

“When you coming home, son?” “I don’t know when”

But we’ll get together then, dad

We’re gonna have a good time then

My dad and I had our great times working together. Whether teaching me to use hand tools (oldest daughter, no sons) or when he would take me to work with him and I would pretend to work – cocoa for me instead of coffee at our coffee break, to when I finally actually worked in accounting with him full time, I loved working with him.

He, like another father mentioned, had cancer. I took over running the practice from him. He wanted me to come to the hospital when the rest of the family was not there so we could talk business – what was going on with client or that.

Since he died I am the accountant and dealt with all of the clients alone. I have one client who I only charge $10 to her tax return as she is filing only the state and that only as she gets a credit refunded to her by doing so. When my husband questions this – I point out that the first time I worked for my dad was when I was 12 years old I added up HER father’s payroll books for dad.

Dad is still with me almost every day and my moral code, sense of humor and belief in being an HONEST accountant comes from him.
