I was a “doll girl”. My sister was the “stuffed animal girl.”
When I went to college I lived at home. My friend lived in a dorm. She did not have a car, I did. So when something was going on at night off campus – my parents did not like me driving alone at night – or sometimes when I would be driving home alone too late from an event on campus I would drive to events off campus and would sleep on her floor after that night so I did not drive home alone.
She had a stuffed bear – Pierre. So I would bring a stuffed bear that was around at home and named him Theodore David Bear (Ted D. Bear for short) to keep Pierre company while we were out.
Somewhere along the line I started getting stuffed bears as gifts and buying unusual ones. Husband while we were dating and since has always been upset with my "I don’t need anything for my birthday etc. so don’t spend the money, was glad when there was a bear – stuffed, figurine, household item, etc.
I now have well over hundred bears (maybe even 200). They are all sizes from 1/4" tall plastic bear – bought in Lancaster, PA recently to about 3 ft tall – Russian Olympics bear. They live in the smallest bedroom in the house with some doll friends (Cabbage Patch Kids including real Original Appalachian Artworks). I had started a small Christmas village of winter and Christmas related bear figurines a couple of decades ago in our upstairs hall. This grew from the top of a trunk to same, plus 2 additional areas leading into the Teddys’ room. (Think Christmas village populated by bears which changes by month 11 times a year.)
My husband, luckily, loves it. He will move bears in the village around also. Latest bears are ones I made/sewed of the two of us during Covid as he was upset at not going out for the holiday. These bears top out at maybe 6 inches tall.
