That’s why squirrels don’t run in zigzags (houseflies either): They move one direction until the predator has them figured out, then they make a right angle turn (and the squirrel throws it’s tail along the prior path, to help fool the predator).
If it’s an explosive shell, the predators don’t need a direct hit. On the other hand, if they’re killing for food, they may want to limit the damage to the prey.
