Awaken, young Chesney, from the worst dream/nightmare ever. And you aren’t the only one! Behold, not only Annie but Lily! She returneth! (Hopefully) Huzzah!!!!!
Alpha has displayed how seriously he takes his duty of protection of Pat – when she’s outside – on two occasions now.
The first time the old bandit was out with Pat for their usual morning patrol of the back of the house – walking side by side. (Normally he sits on her shoulders for the longer view and pats her with his paw to indicate things of interest.) A bear is suddenly spotted about twenty feet away behind some bushes. Alpha went into disorganized overdrive and climbed straight up Pat to stand on her shoulders (guess that’s his version of Battle Stations) and threaten the bear.
Bear, of course, ran away. Alpha was thoroughly wound up and wouldn’t let Pat out of his sight for a moment. He even demanded to be let into the car to accompany her (for the first time ever) when she went to drive to the post office eight miles away to pick up the mail. He shadowed her everywhere closely for over a week.
More recently, Pat was out looking for a Christmas tree, walking along the game trail that runs along the bottom of the property. Alpha was on her shoulder as usual. All of a sudden he starts whacking her in the head with his paw. No claws, just urgent batting. Not his usual “Hey, look at that there, cool!” thing. Further along the trail she goes, the more agitated he gets. So, Pat turns around, heads back to the house, he quietens down.
We have bear, coyote and coyote/wolf hybrids use that trail. Not to mention moose. Don’t know what it was he already knew was down there (he always does his perimeter security check first thing) but it’s always smart to listen to this particular individual when he tells you there’s bad ju-ju coming for you if you go any further…
Ockham’s Razor was applied here. The simplest explanation for all of this behavior was that he was protecting his friend. He felt bad when he wasn’t up where he should have been the first time, second time was warning his friend but being where he should have been to do so.
This trip to Santa Fe was a horrible trip from the start. It got nothing but worse this morning. About 2 hours south of Santa Fe, we made a pit stop. Could we get back on 40 south? No, we could not. Why? Because 1. a little subaru tangled with an 18 wheeler and you can guess who lost. That car was totaled. I would be shocked if anyone survived.
2, they were working on the freeway and CLOSED THE FREAKIN ON RAMP TO EVERYONE. So, anyone coming out of the travel center had to go BACK ON 40 NORTH until they found one of those crossovers that only emergency vehicles are supposed to use.
We lost TWO FULL hours in that mess.
Finally made it to Kingman at 5:45. Drove thru Jack in the Box, then got checked in here. I hope to be back in Hurricane by noon.
Diane has been sending me really cute pics of the cats twice a day. Blackjack has been up to his antics in the kitchen, pulling drawers open.
Annie must have good news. Why else would she be smiling? On another note, saw a raven, three golden crowned kinglets, four varied thrushes, a rabbit, and a deer while out walking today.
Just a shoutout to everyone to notice my BIG thanks to Gweedo! He made a lovely contribution to our local horse rescue (arrived in his Christmas card)(and/or also a dog rescue). I’ve already notified Redemption Road Rescue, and will call tomorrow to inquire about needs of our local dog rescue (have a new little fellow from them). Thanks MUCHO, Gweedo!
