There is something to be said for setting your own hours… Even if you work far longer than a 40 hour week and don’t get paid for overtime.

Long ago visit to Cape Cod, we bought lobsters right out of the lobstermen’s garage. We paid whatever they asked!

Many years ago I spent a week with a friend whose father was a lobsterman in Fundy Bay Nova Scotia. Because of tides he would leave an hour later each day and every four days go back to early start. I was taken out for one day of work, and it was like the last panel all day. Great day to look back on.

I got a good chuckle from panel 6.

It’s frequently shown that Wallace takes a lot after his mother, but man, there’s a lot of his dad in him, too.

Thank you and your brother lobsterman for keeping a very honorable tradition and way of life alive. Also lobsters do taste good……

By the way, somewhat along these lines, if you’re looking for a good book to read check out “Captains Courageous” by Rudyard Kipling.

The spoiled son of a wealthy railroad tycoon gets washed overboard on a trans-Atlantic cruise. He’s picked up by the crew of the “We’re Here” who doesn’t have time for his nonsense and they put him to work.

It’s a great coming of age story set in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland in the 1890’s.

It makes a great case that the children of the obscenely wealthy would benefit from being cast adrift in the North Atlantic.

Each one of those panels is a work of art; each could stand on it’s own for the humor, mood and memories each evoke. However, the last panel is epic.

People who try to bring the price down have no clue or are just heartless. They don’t care how much work goes into the product they can certainly afford, if they can’t they shouldn’t have ordered it. They just want to brag about the deal they made. I struggle with this as a seamstress. They don’t realize the time and effort required to make a garment, not even including all the ironing and cutting to prepare the pattern, laying out the fabric and cutting it. And now, quality fabric is at a premium and hard to find, many fabric stores have closed down. It’s nearly impossible to find a pattern. I looked online, one store was asking $80 per pattern. I create lovely quality items for people to choose from and they ask for something in a style or print I don’t have, I’m running around looking high and low for plaid. I have designer aprons with beautiful print and hand-made bias, they want plain black with “*I turn on Grills*” printed on it. When it’s time to pay they say, “I didn’t get that many hours this week, I’m only going to pay you ‘X amount’,” AND I LET THEM!

My wife used to give a class called “How to find happiness in a job you sometimes hate” for her job. She told a story about a lineman who would have to go out after a storm to restore the downed powerlines in his district. Despite having to brave the miserable conditions, the cold pelting rain and the stinging ice while climbing a pole in the dark of night, the one thing that brought him so much satisfaction was watching the lights come back on when he made that last connection.
