Moth caterpillars spin cocoons, but not butterflies. A butterfly caterpillar forms a chrysalis.

so when in cartoons like Calvin & Hobbes, when the food forms a sentient goo that jumps like an alien face-huger, or if the rotten food in Garfield jumps from the fridge, it turns it is possible. The things you learn in cartoons…

I find watching their transformation as awesome as watching a baby coming together in the womb. just AWESOME. and those cocoons wiggle just like a baby in the womb

Pardon my pedantry, but butterflies emerge from a CHRYSALIS, moths emerge from a cocoon. Difference being, the skin of the butterfly caterpillar becomes the shell of the chrysalis inside which it undergoes metamorphosis. Moths create their shell either by spinning a cocoon from their caterpillars or using twigs and leaves to cover themselves.

    Thus endeth the lesson.

I remember being five or six years old and being absolutely convinced that my mother was crazy when she told me a four-inch long, bright green caterpillar was an insect.

I’ve heard that butterflies remember their lives as caterpillars, but I don’t know how the scientists know that.
