Andy could play that part in his sleep’

Overqualified!

You’d think the job service would have told Andy before Flo did.

That was a dirty trick Flo.

Andy, will Sleep on it.

Took me some googling to get the joke. For the title role in “Waiting for Godot” Andy wouldn’t even have to show up.

I think Andy is over-qualified.

Andy Capp is lazier than Rip Van Winkle was. Rip Van Winkle was a lazy man without a job and unwilling to do house repairs for his family but he did have friends and would help his friends with house repairs that he would not do in his own home.

When Rip Van Winkle came home after his twenty-year-sleep, he was told “That’s Rip Van Winkle over there.” He thought that he really was seeing himself asleep but it turned out to be his son Rip Van Winkle junior who slept under the same tree that Rip Van Winkle senior did most of his sleeping under.

I remember seeing Mr Magoo as Rip Van Winkle in the TV show “The Famous Adventures of Mr Magoo” in which he appeared as many fictional characters including Dr Watson, Long John Silver and Cyrano de Bergerac. He also appeared as Puck from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Watching Mr Magoo as these characters was my first introduction to many of them.

There have been a couple of Red and Rover story arcs inspired by the story of Rip Van Winkle. In the first, Red had the idea of trying to sleep under a tree for twenty years like Rip. He later realised that Rover would not be alive when he woke up so that put him off the idea.

In the later story arc, Red slept under a tree and seems to have dreamed that he woke up as a grown man with Rover as an old dog. It wasn’t actually stated that it was a dream but Red did solve the problem by going back to sleep on the other side of the tree in the hope that he would wake up as a kid again. When he woke up, he and Rover were the same as usual.

As I have mentioned before, Calvin and Hobbes is my favourite comic strip with Andy Capp in second place and Red and Rover and The Wizard of Id in strong competition for third place.

It’ll be a sleeper hit.

Then he can go on to perform as the oom pah pah man in Oliver…

A dream role for Andy.

A good role for Andy. The sleeping suits him fine. Doing nothing before sleeping is also a good fit.

Perfect for the roll and cheap to all they have to pay him is a case of Ale ! ( I know Community Theater don’t pay )

he could also audition for that Arthur Miller play and take the role or Will He Be Low Man.

Van Winkle sleeping for 20 years actually takes up less than one page of the story. The real story is about him (and America) before and after his sleep. Andy would indeed be the star with plenty of lines. I think he should go home, lie down on the sofa and sleep on it.

Andy will make it his own part. Nothing wrong with Ripped One Van Winkle. Zzzzz

Unfortunately Rip did not drink beer!

Washington Irving travelled in a time machine to the future where he meets Andy and gives him a story idea, then travels back to his own time to write it.

Now you see what she sees in you.

I had no idea that Ol’ Rip was a booze hound.

A Brahms and Wagner Musical!!

LOL! My wife was a theater major, and one of the one-act plays she was in was a murder-comedy. During the whole performance, the body had to lay perfectly still in the middle of the set. I nailed that role!

That’s what my Dad used to call me because I love sleeping. Haha! Very much like our hero (as dear Affie would say)

Another job Andy is qualified for is ‘mattress tester’ but Lil Abner has already taken that position.

The perfect role for Andy. Not only does Rip Van Winkle sleep for a long time, he also gets really drunk.

Andy would be more suited to playing the tree which Rip slept beneath. He tends to stay rooted to one spot during his frequent naps.
