Arlo is right…thunder is the sound that lightning makes…so you’re actually hearing the lightning. Once a science geek always a science geek.

Whatever. The important thing is that if you hear it, it has probably already missed you.

I’m pretty sure Arlo’s sleep-muddled brain should roll over and be quiet. You see lightning, you hear thunder, the sound lightning makes.

I’ve felt lightning……Never did see it or hear it…..Only been struck by lightning once…That’s enough…..

Lightning, thunder! Considering what the weather has been like this summer, they should be running for the basement.

The point here is that some people just have to knit pick everything you say. My family is a lot like that. I think we got it from my Dad. I know I get on a roll some times with my wife and have to reign myself in. No one likes to be constantly criticized, and it can be very damaging to a relationship. Teasing is one thing…..constant critique is another.

Listen… do you smell something?

The comment are very “en-lightning”.

A few years ago, we heard “thunder that goes on and on” in the middle of the night. Didn’t find out until the morning news, it was a landslide. So we didn’t technically hear thunder, but the mountain burping?

If Janis lived in the Tampa Bay area in Florida, she’d be popping up and down all night like a clown bop-toy. Why should she be angry or upset about thunder at night? Or announce loudly that she heard it? I know it’s a comic, but sheesh.

Pedantic.

I wouldn’t want to rain on your parade but, we have to assume it was drawn by a “real” person about things that would ap “peal” to real people. Hold your “thunderous” applause til’ the end. Please don’t bolt for the door. Its’ only a wise “crack”.

Varnes: It missed me. I did not see it, outside my window was only clear, blue sky. I heard it; my ears took awhile to recover. I felt it; major chest compression followed by a sort of vibration in my teeth. The lightning, from a very black sky, had struck an abandoned Conalrad radio tower on the other side of a relatively small building. “This was only a test… Had it been a real lightning bolt, the tower would have melted onto the building.”

We used to say “God’s bowling”.

I live near Tampa, the lightning capital of the U.S. We see the lightning and hear the thunder. You don’t hear anything until a few second after the lightning. Thunder is the sound of lightning.

Just a comment. I was standing 20 ft. from a transformer when it got hit by lightning. I saw the strike and heard crackling then I heard thunder. After that I always thought of thunder as the echo. I am definitely not a scientist.

Stormy nights always meant snuggling when the ex and I were together…she didn’t like that type of weather!!

Well, if we’re going to get sciency, lightning causes thunder: the electric discharge separates the air, and when the air rushes back together, it creates the sound we call thunder. So we hear thunder created by lightning.

I just heard lightning and I saw the thunder!!

I think its more “I hear barking” “no you hear dogs”.. so it would be “you hear lightning thundering?”

Egrayj: Speaking of corrections, it’s “reining…in,” not “reign…in.” Kings reign, and rein in their horse.

So, if lightening is what you hear, what is thunder?
