    In many societies, the Solstice was considered MID-winter. In Portland, OR December is the coldest month and has the worst storms, so it’s uphill into Spring.

    Winter Solstice marks the beginning of ASTRONOMICAL winter… I prefer to think of it (as many do) as Midwinter Day.
