Lets talk grocery shopping before and after Trump each week my grocery bill was on average $108 to $113 weekly after Trump same items brands now I am spending upwards of $170 a week this is what tariff wars does to the middle class .
Mom would fill the cart to over the top, and pull the $20 bill out to pay for it. My comic book would be my weekly allowance of 15 cents, less three for penny candy.
several pounds of ground beef . . .. so spaghetti one night, hamburgers one night, tacos one night and hamburger helper one night (fish sticks on Friday cuz we were Catholic)
And I’d be sitting at the dinner table long after everyone was done because I didn’t like what we were having. Saturday lunch was always hot dogs (while watching baseball) and dinner was beans.
I drive past the local grocery every day so it’s just as easy to run in for 5 minutes and pick up something we actually want for dinner. Other items are picked up every couple of weeks. When I splurge on something nice, I compare it to a restaurant bill plus tip.
My father got paid once a month. My mother would buy fish sticks and put them in the freezer. We would then eat them at the end of month, before my dad’s next paycheck came in. I hated fish sticks.
Fish sticks, mac and cheese with canned tomatoes, meat loaf, fried liver, breakfast night (pancakes or french toast and bacon and scrambled eggs), hamburgers and fried potatoes.. That was supper at my house on East Circle Drive growing up. Dad was like Arlo-made pot of beef-veg soup or beans and ham on weekends. We did ok.
It was a 20 mile trip to a grocery store when I was a kid. And even with gas at $.24 a gallon, my parents were loath to drive that far more than once a week
I’d rather stop at the grocery store more frequently than once a week. I get fresher produce, and I don’t overbuy. I’m not a fan of a stuffed refergerator or pantry.
My family, (that is, my parents, my folks) would food shop every Saturday. I was too young to follow prices and such, but I do remember that our groceries would be bagged, and then the bags were put into bins and sent on a conveyor (the type that was made of lots of wheels), and the bins would travel down the conveyor to a bay outside. My dad would be given numbered cards that matched the bins, and the attendant would locate the bins, bring them forward, and then load our groceries into the car. That was fifty-five or so years ago. And we had spaghetti – or something else Italian – every Thursday.
Dad did not have a payday as he was self employed and took checks when he went to clients to work – some monthly and some quarterly, but he did bill for tax return prep when it was it tax season. Mom used to shop on Thursdays – it had something to do with advertised items being in stock then.
When I got married I shopped on Thursday because mom did. As we went along I realized that this was stupid as we tended to eat out or bring in on Saturday and Sunday night and sometimes Friday nights – so almost everything I bought that was fresh was 4 days old by the time I used it. I switched to Monday shopping with an extra stop on Friday to fill in what I might need for snacks or such on the weekend and always made sure I had food for his vacation days as he was/is not someone to go food shopping with (“But I don’t feel like that tonight” – “No it is on sale and I will freeze it” “eh”. We have reached a point where we shop daily that for night’s dinner as he is always with me when food shopping (and other times). Rare is the time I can stock up when items are on sale. I used to cut and use coupons – I would set the money aside in a special savings account and save around $500 towards vacation – rare to even find a coupon these days that is for something we buy.
We did not have a lot of the dishes mentioned – never tacos. Most of the time at least one of us in my family was on a diet so food tended to be lean meats and vegetables most of the time.

And at the end of every month we’d hunt down all the small change and, if there was enough, splurge on something we never otherwise had.

I always make a list. Then when I get home from the store and put everything away, I make a list of all the stuff I forgot to put on the first list.

I still shop once a week and the bills run $20-30, unless I’m buying dog food/treats or bird seed. A bit more if my wife is along.

The grocery bill in the “old days” was dozens of dollars less, as well.

Sad when even your daily comic strip comments are loaded with political jabs. Can’t we just enjoy Arlo and Janis?

I think the concept here is to ensure the food is fresh, but it’s probably just an excuse for someone who likes to go shopping.
