That’s TWO things I’ve learned today!

The other is how to pronounce Pierre, South Dakota. (See today’s “9 Chickweed Lane”: https://www.gocomics.com/9chickweedlane/2022/02/27 )

I was told the tradition was that the one served the baby Jesus was to provide the cake next year.

Similar to the tradition of putting a silver threepence or sixpence into a Christmas pudding.

I’m starting to suspect that those “tradition” cakes are a bakery scam. Three Kings Day, Easter, Mardi Gras… it’s the same insipid piece of bread with a high price. They only change the decoration and the toy. Let’s face it, if they try to sell that kind of “cake” on any other day, would you buy it? :D

people forget that Mardi Gras started out as a Catholic celebration. It greatly expanded over the centuries and IMPO the religious component has been forgotten.

We have that in Latin America, but those are served on the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6), not Mardi Gras.

So that’s what a King Cake looks like. Very cool looking. Is this the traditional shape and color?

Shouldn’t it be a baby rabbit?

I work in a law firm, and one of the partners had a client in New Orleans who sent her a King Cake every year. She retired five years ago, but so far we still get the cake, and as of last year the baby was baked inside. (I’m not doubting that some or even most King Cakes now have the baby on the outside, but it’s not universal..at least as of last year.)

I wouldn’t want to eat something that might have a hard inedible item in it. I would cut my cake up into tiny pieces to I wouldn’t bite into the hard item. It is a dumb tradition.

Whenever I’ve encountered king cakes, there was a hard bean as the “prize” inside.

For a traditional, Cajun Mardi Gras experience with a chicken run, horses, costumes, Cajun music, food, and king cakes, y’all need to come down to South Louisiana, AKA, Acadiana/Cajun Country! Way more family friendly than NOLA
