I used to joke that my late mom treated me like an idol. She gave me burnt offerings! She did love my joke that her political opponents made her May 1 birthday the international distress signal. When they saw her coming, they yelled, “MAYDAY!”

Mom was very politically active almost to the end at age 91 in 2020. She ran for a seat on her township’s Board of Supervisors at age 90! She also didn’t look anywhere near her age. She could pass for 60-65 any day of the week.

Sorry guys, but I don’t know of any bad Mexican cooks … I don’t believe there is such a thing! (And I’m a white guy lucky enough to be married to a great Mexican cook!)

My mother once told me she could make Chile Con Carne in just a half an hour.

It was like chewing on a chile flavored arm…

Amp it up and add Chili Powder. Then a couple of ‘lumps’ of Velveeta. Microwave optional, but if you’re wearing your ‘Kiss The Cook’ apron already… what the heck.

I seem to have blocked all memories of opening a can of vienna sausages. Any one else know the feeling?

I always got sick after eating them. I only did that twice. the second time to prove those delicious sausages had nothing 3do with my emptying my stomach in opportune places.

Bachelor meal (I say that but I could cook rather well as I learned young women liked a guy who could cook)

I know a guy who cannot boil water. Seriously. If he can’t throw it in a microwave, he won’t eat it.

My pastor’s wife use to tell the story of the first time she made Macaroni & cheese from the box. She was visiting her future husband and his roommates (they all went to college together) they were getting the water ready to add the macaroni but everyone got called away for one reason or another and she was the only one left in the kitchen. Now at that time she’d never cooked anything in her life, but she read the cooking instructions on the box and figured it would be easy enough. So she waited to the water to come to a boil and then dropped the unopened box into the pan. She’s learned to cook since then.

My mother-in-law didn’t want the thanksgiving turkey to be dry, so she boiled it in a big pot of water.

Vienna sausages! A must-have gourmet food item in 1950’s Bronx!

For years, my Mexican-Puerto Rican mom put them in her rice dishes until the fam rebelled.

Back in the mid 1970’s, my mom experimented with Underwood Deviled Ham tacos. Once.

i had a girlfriend who believed that ketchup was the universal spice. we usually dined out. another accidentally dumped most of the salt shaker into the dinner she had happily offered to prepare me and then actually served it to me without mentioning the accident. she seemed perplexed that i was gagging…

I’ve always been glad Vienna Sausages come in those tiny little cans because the Last Sausage in the can is also when they stop tasting Good.

If they came in larger cans, I’d never buy them because I hate wasting Food.
