You get to be a certain age and you feel the aches and pain of someone who falls as much as they do. Depending on what those aches and pains are and how they came about, this is not always a bad thing.
I’m sure many have – it is a serious thing that isn’t funny for many. I just read a story in my local news about a small bookstore (I never heard of it until now) that is closing due to the owner taking a fall on some ice and breaking a hip and some ribs. My own grandmother broke her hip in a fall on the ice and was infirm the rest of her life, which unfortunately, wasn’t long after. So, be CAREFUL out there on the frozen water!
You literally have to know how to take a fall. One of the things I learned in the military was how to do a parachute landing fall. I can’t tell you how many injuries that has prevented. When I feel myself going down, I just go into it. I still wind up on the ground, but on friendlier terms.
It’s like “rolling with the punches” only the ground is doing the punching.
I once missed the bottom four steps – don’t know if I slipped on the rug, or what happened – and I was VERY lucky not to have broken anything. Hubby wasn’t home, but the dog was here to “help”. The only saying “It only hurts when I laugh” is, oh! so true.
My personal observation is that women react to a fall with great embarrassment and act as if it didn’t happen! Men,on the other hand jump up cuss loudly while trying to brush themselves off! ;o]
I did that just last July. I was up on a step ladder changing lightbulbs and the stepladder tipped and I fell. I lay there for a bit, running thru the catalog of pain, trying to figure out if I broke anything. The pain settled into three areas, my wrist, my head, and my foot. Wrist just had minor soft tissue damage, hit my head on the side of some carboard boxes, but no damage other than a sore spot – but the foot… snapped the 5th metatarsal bone (long foot bone above the pinky toe) of my left foot. Apparently, I stepped on the edge of the step as the ladder tipped over (trying to keep my balance). Still not 100% healed, but can walk normally and am back to exercising. Foot swells a bit every now and then and aches occasionally, but the orthopedist told me it would for almost a year (thankfully no cast and no surgery – just a boot and staying off it as much as possible).
@contralto2b: friend of mine had that kind of break and had to wear a boot. He called it his ‘spectator boot’ because he sure wasn’t going to do anything else but watch until it healed.
I fell down the stairs at 5:30 in the morning. My wife had left a blanket on the hardwood floor for the dog, and I slipped. I thought for sure I was hurt bad. But nothing was broken. And that stupid dog just ran away!
When caught like this, I just recall watching my “graceful” cat walk away from an awkward spill, and (with the similar air of non-chalance) reply: “I meant to do that…”

Oh yeah! All there? All in one piece? Now I’m embarrassed and sore. I hope nobody saw me trip over my own shadow.

Nope. Most “folks” after falling, look around all embarrassed, to see if anybody is LAUGHING at them……,

To paraphrase Foghorn Leghorn, fortunately he always keeps his bones numbered for just such an emergency.
