    From another perspective, they could have been just hanging out and saw the cat “fall” from a ledge several floors up or down. Unlikely, but possible.

    Adolescent cats and other light weight cats can fall/jump from considerable heights without significant or even any injury. I have seen video of a cat perched on a powerline crossbar for hours; The power company came and de-dnergised the power line went up on a boom truck to get the cat and rather than be rescued it jumped down vic~ 60ft (18m) and ran off, seemingly uninjured. Of course it was an outside cat and appeared to be thin. THAT makes a huge difference. It would certainly kill my (indoor only) cat.
