I know you have expressed disapproval of some of my comments but I have enjoyed reading your views. You said recently that you think Hobbes symbolises Calvin’s insecurity. I think he is much more complex than that as he can make Calvin feel insecure but can also give him confidence and security.

You have also disagreed with some of my views on Hobbes but you have also asked “Can we disagree and still be friends?” I agreed that we can and added that Calvin and Hobbes disagree on many things which is part of the marvellous characterisation in this wonderful comic strip. Hobbes obviously sees the two sides of a situation far more often than Calvin does but there are also times when Calvin and Hobbes are in total disagreement with neither party able to understand the other’s viewpoint. Their friendship easily survives this although Calvin has tried to sell Hobbes to a pet store on at least one occasion.

On a day where most newspaper comics are reruns (due to many papers not delivering on Christmas day), it’s acceptable to see this among the many. (Keep in mind that this was also during Bill Watterson’s first sabbatical in 1991.)
