Some days nothing goes right.Farmer Brown just needs to remember the philosophy of Lou Holtz: “Life is ten percent what happens to you, and ninety percent how you respond to it.” Today is one of those ten percent days.

@orinoco womble: Over the years, Snoopy’s head and ears first became much narrower. Then they became wider again as his head grew to be almost as big as the rest of his body.Calvin and Hobbes also had bodies that evolved a little bit over the years, but they never changed as dramatically as the Peanuts characters.

I like the guy leaping (or being thrown?) from the train in the third panel.

Throw in an asteroid, and you’ve got the ultimate Irwin Allen disaster flick! I’d pay to see it!

Incidently farmer Brown’s last thoughts were: “Hopefully this will destroy all the evidence in the freezer.”

One thing about Bill Watterson – he drew accurate details in these Sunday strips. Those aren’t “generic” locomotives out of his imagination. They are GE locomotives, with flared radiator grills, and boxy fuel tanks, and catwalks inset behind the cabs with accurate handrails. I’ll bet the aircraft is just as accutate, too.

That earthquake fault is pretty accurately drawn also. Farmer Brown is a disaster magnet – we’ve all known people like this.

Yeah,this is about art..and L-1011s did that,and let’s hope Whip is pc,but that was a MD-80 which did that too.Dunno bout GE engines,but iirc Denzel was driving one of them too.Hell this whole strip is Denzel! Can he stop sinkholes too?Cheers,RE

… and yes, I think Watterson drew the L1011 in this comic. Why draw a plane with fewer passengers for this “Calvin Catastrophe”?

Calvin watches way too much SYFy channel.

The resulting collisions gave birth to the tea party, and untold death and destruction has followed in its wake.

The plane looks closest to an L-1011, with two engines on the wings and one on the tail. But note that Bill Watterson has drawn some downward curvature on the top of the tail engine as it connects to the tail. The L-1011 was flat on top of the tail engine and curved upward at the tail: L-1011He has not drawn a 727, because the 727 had no engines on the wings and three on the tail. The top engine was horizontal on top and did not curve upward where it connected to the tail: 727Both the L-1011 and the 727 were ducted downward and exited at the back of the fuselage, like in Bill Watterson’s drawing. He has not drawn a DC-10, because the DC-10 had a tail engine that went straight through: DC-10Sadly, all three planes tended to look quite similar after they crashed.

A bad day to be farmer Brown. On the lighter side his wife of 30 years is about to get a pay check.. that was until she fatefully went sky diving in a the plane that is about to land on farmer Brown..

Great vocabulary, Calvin. He doesn’t get bad marks because he’s dumb. He gets them because he’s bored. Though I wish he’d take math more seriously.

Jobecur appreciates Watterson’s awesome talent-I agree 100%. Calvin’s imagination is right up there, too.

It’s the “…eye twitches involuntarily.” That makes it. It’s all in the details.

This is one of my all-time favorite C&H strips. The involuntary eye-twitch is icing on the cake of this disaster sequence.

I thought for sure the last panel would have Dad taking a match to the charcoal grill.

Hi Draquinty. Welcome! Most of the comments on this site are early in the day (Eastern time), so probably very few people saw your posting. Sometimes there are 15 or 20 comments before 6:00 am Eastern.

Obviously Calvin seems to have some anamosity toward farmer Brown.

The farmer’s remaining family will sue the stove manufacturer….
