Just five more days until Garfield’s birthday. Just have more days. (The comic strip began in 1978, you youngsters who listen to CDs and iPods and don’t know what a “record” is.)
An increasing number of albums are released on vinyl these days. The sound is superior to that of CDs but the method of reproducing that sound (turntable and stylus) is not; hence the scratches etc..I still have all my LPs and singles even though one of them is valued at over £1000 in collector magazines.
The laugh is on the record. Pcolli is right. LP sales have increased lately and more and more major artist are releasing their albums on LP’s. In fact quite of few of record stores are actually expanding.
I still have over 500 albums and over 500 45s. I’ve played some of them for my daughters; they’re probably the only grade-school-aged kids in our area who even know what 45s are!
There is a song. Cannot remember the title or the singer, because I am over 45, it will come though. But, the lyric said “… put my 45 on…” It is a modern song and I was amazed that a young person would know what a 45 was. Turns out that was her SPF factor for sun protection.
Oh come on, we’re not that old just because we remember records! I still have some 45’s in a box around here but no record player to play them on. A lot of those songs are uploaded to you tube though!
FYI – The Virgin Megastore in Times Square has a vinyl department of all new music, it seems some club DJs still prefer to spin Old School. Personally, I have over 3,000 albums and around 200 45s — I’m a collector.
My mom had opera 45s. They were made by RCA as a marketing gimmick and colored red. We had one that we played over and over again. We used to play with them because you could see through the red color. Now they’re worth a mint on the collector market. Garfield isn’t the only one who feels old right now.
he lost the little yellow plastic goodie for the center so he’ll never hear what’s on the record. This is Boss radio playin’ mounds of sounds and stax of wax. Playing the boss hits that the boss told us to play!
I can remember things, too – like when:.Parents disciplined their childrenPeople understood that everyone had a different opinionThe government respected their electorate betterWar wasn’t everythingWe got up in the mornings and got on with lifeYou only contacted your friends when you had something important to say (not: “Hey, I’ve just had a coffee”)People didn’t carry out conversations with people who weren’t in the roomYoung girls didn’t have kids just to claim benefits..And so much more. However, I agree with you about some of the things you mentioned. Things change and then come around again.
I have a record that my grandmother had pressed on vinyl; she was a pretty good church singer. It’s the size of a 78, but the groove runs from the centre outwards to the edge. Never could figure out why it was made this way; perhaps because she was an “amateur” singer?
Word on the street is, those vinyl records and record players are coming back into style. I forget exactly WHERE I heard it, but I do remember hearing it somewhere.
I have over 700 45s, close to 1000 albums and I’m not sure how many 78s. There are also 8-track tapes cassettes and just recently I added CDs to the mix. I don’t have any wax cylinders but I couldn’t play them if I did.
The vinyl they’re putting out now is nowhere the volume they used to put out. As a result the new stuff is way higher in quality. If you don’t believe me I have a copy of Thriller that will prove my point.

Yeah, I remember those, and 8-tracks, too. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some pesky kids to chase off my lawn!

I loved my dad’s record player, had one of my own in my BR, and a tape deck, and I prefer CDs, but ANYthing would sound better than MP3s……..
