"Warning! Do not break fourth wall!" Lucy: Uh...what does it mean to break the fourth wall? Danae: Let's see...ah, here it is...it's an imaginary wall between fictional characters and an audience, and it's broken when a character recognizes their own fictionality. Lucy: So...it's an imaginary wall that's broken by fictional characters who point out they're not real? Danae: Um...yeah, I guess so. Lucy: Then it's not anything we need to worry about, right? Danae: Duh...of course not. As long as we stay away from those weirdos. Lucy: Ewww...no problemo.

But if they break the wall, don’t they cease to exist? I mean, if the wall is broken, doesn’t all their improbabilty leak out?

If THEY break it, then that means YOU can come inside!

Well, I’m sure that the characters are real. I can see them right there on my screen but I’m pretty sure that there’s no such person as Superfrog .. and some of these other names seem a bit dubious…. so.. OH MY GOODNESS.. I just recognized that we’re a fictional audience!! .. probably.

You’re pirates. Hang the code, and hang the rules. They’re more like guidelines anyway.

I notice that’s not been happening much in animatedcartoons lately since the Cartoon Network series Chowder (2007-2010). Probably the best (and only) TV series that broke the fourth wall (quite often) was Moonlighting (1985-89). Is are there any others that has been doing that since then?

I don’t watch as much TV as I used to, don’t know current examples of breaking 4th wall. One of my personal favorites from the past was an episode of Northern Exposure where one of the regulars and the guest star are about to have a duel to the death – pistols at 20 paces. They’re just about to start when everyone else breaks character. One actor says “We can’t have this scene. We can’t kill off a regular and it wouldn’t work going forward to have him be a killer!” Everybody goes “Yeah!” and looks around at each other, kind’a lost “What do we do now?” One of the actresses says “Let’s just skip to Scene 42, I liked that one in read-through” So – the next thing we see is all of them back in the bar (scene 42 being toward the tag end of the episode) back in character like nothing happened.

Shakespeare and many other great dramatist, successfully employ breaking the Fourth Wall in the asides to the audience. When done properly, not only does the audience willingly suspend their disbelief but feel that they are being brought into the action.

Breaking the Fourth Wall is like placing dynamite – it’s one of those things that should only be left to qualified professionals. Groucho Marx was one of the greatest ad libbers ever on TV or film, and he was a master of breaking the Fourth Wall.In the film “Horse Feathers,” as Chico is about to begin playing the piano, Groucho stands up and tells the audience, “I have to stay here, but” and urges the audience to go into the lobby until it’s over. In another film, he broke the Foruth Wall, addressing the audience with dialogue inspired by the play S"trange Interlude" – in which the characters addressed the audience. When Margaret Dumont, (Groucho’s best straight man) asked him what he was doing, Groucho apologized and said he was just having a strange interlude.

Come to think of it, Wiley, how about a “Danae and Lio” crossover by Halloween? Of course it should include the “Gravesites”.

The “wall” in this case being the boundary between characters and their worlds, it reminds me of a short graphic novel someone wrote a few years ago. Holmes & Watson visited by Dr. Jekyl, cross through some other author’s London (Dickens, maybe?), look for Mr Hyde, end up in the Rue Morgue – all because they were in books stacked up beside each other on someone’s shelf.
