Mrs. Beger: "For Quill's first meal I'll make your favorite: Sloppy joes with pineapple rings and rainbow jell-o" Gunther: "WHAT? NO!" Gunther: "Quill's an aussie surfer dude, mom! He eats steak! Bacon! Deep-fried cheese balls!" Mrs. Berger: "Oh. So I shouldn't make the tofu hot dogs you like?" Gunther: "Aiyiyi. He's gonna move out after one meal"

@ howtheduck: And its important to Gunther does not move out too quickly because…….either maybe he wants another chance to get close with LuAnn or……better chances for double dates. Quill/LuAnn Gunther/Rosa.
DaJellyBelly about 11 years ago
Sloppy Joes with Pineapple rings and rainbow Jello-O doesn’t sound too bad. Plus I am sure that Quill has been raised to eat what is set before you when you are in another person’s home. I’m also quite sure that Mrs. Berger will make adjustments to her menu to accommodate Quill’s diet.

There are just some guys who are real “pal-zy” with someone, even with someone who is his chief competition for a girl’s affections. Some people are just welcoming and cordial… a lot of people aren’t used to that type of person… but some are just easy to be enthusiastic, no strings attached….

Gunther’s mom is taking it rather well, don’t you think, that suddenly she is informed she is expected to provide more expensive fare than usual. Does she have the budget for that? Also makes me wonder if Quill’s parents are kicking in any $$ to help Gunther’s mom meet expenses for their son, or how that goes. I honestly don’t know. Anyone ever host an exchange student for a school year?
JayBluE about 11 years ago
There was this episode of the Cosby show, where Vanessa’s date was like that, mostly a person “eager to please”. His chief rival suddenly appeared, and the guy actually wanted the other one to hang out with him and Vanessa…. everyone kept trying to tell him the danger in doing so, but he reasoned to them: “It takes the pressure off of me, if he goes!” Theo retorted: “Yeah, well you won’t be feeling any pressure, tonight!”… – Some guys are more upbeat and not so competitive.. Gunther is like that… he’s not as “testosterone-y” as other guys his age… go figure….

Gunther’s mom seems willing to accommodate her son’s notion of what an Aussie—and Quill specifically—does or does not eat. But Gunther is just a bundle of anxiety, fearing something will go horribly wrong. —Relax, Gunther. Quill is an easygoing guy….

The depth of Gunther’s reaction isn’t that sort of thing that would result from a “friend’s” moving to town but deciding to live somewhere else. It’s clear that Gunther was looking forward to being with Quill just as much as Luann was. I wonder who Quill was more interested in being with.

Oh Hey Gunther? Are You gonna tell “Q-ball” that YOU are the FIRST Guy that Lu ever saw Naked? It would make a GREAT “Ice-Breaker!”

Do you like Gladiator movies, Gunther?

I’m always amazed by Gunther’s “magic” plaid shirts. The criss-cross lines on the sleeves are parallel to the body of the shirt almost any way he holds his arms.
Where the heck does he buy those shirts? (or more likely, where does his mommy buy them?)

if Quill is going to live with Gunther for 9 months or so then he better get used to eating American food, besides he has lived in the US before and I am sure, like most teenagers, he has developed a taste for hamburgers and fast food.

Or you could, y’know, ask him what he likes. Duh?

Gunther was so looking forward to sewing all Quill’s clothes. (He already made Quill’s “George” costume, so he has all Quill’s measurements already.) Gunther had a whole wardrobe of patterns all ready to go. His very own life-sized “Ken” doll! What fun they would have together! And now Mom spoiled it all, with her Sloppy Joes. Shame on you, Momma!!!

I don’t think Gunther’s interested in Quill sexually. He probably values Quill’s friendship highly and wants to make an impossibly good showing (hopefully the Qster will chill him out with his mellow Aussie vibes). I hope we see G, Q, and Knute hanging out, since Knute is Gunther’s best friend currently. Seems like a natural development.

I have to admit, this strip got my immediate attention! Are Greg/Karen trying to play with us in giving the “perception” as to Gunth’s “preferences,” or could those be his real preferences “coming out,” or could it be a carefully planned plot to get intel on Lu from one of the best sources… his direct competition? Not that there’s anything wrong with those “preferences,” but I do hope it’s the latter, and I would applaud his(Gunth’s) craftiness in doing so. Maybe he learned something from volunteering at “Drama Camp.”
Friends close….. Enemies closer! ;-PPPP
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Not having a father to guide him, and with only his mom for an example, Gunther does at times come off sort of whimpy….but so that he can watch how he behaves and handles different situations. I see Quill as more of a substiute father, for demonstrating how guys act, for Gunth. ^Good point.

I love tofu dogs. I get them at Trader Joes. They are called Smart Dogs. Wrap a slice of cheese around them. Yummy!
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Actually, Since Lu and “Virtual Quill” helped Gunther out with Rosa, he probably had some conversations with him, and saw him as a “role model” for helping him improve with Rosa, or anyone else, for that matter. He sure couldn’t do that with Knute when it came to the prom… Qcumber’s easygoing nature probably does Gunther some good, too, as he is a nervous person at times. – Either that, or Greg made the cast draw straws and Gunther’s mom was “persuaded” to put him up for the course of his stay, here… and also used the Bergers as a vehicle for this gag about G-man’s anxieties….
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Yeah, that too. He hasn’t had a sibling or a guy to actually learn from or pal around with. Knute is a good friend, but not the one to go to for everything….

Gunther’s mom is cooking for the boys like they are six year-olds, using recipes from a 1950s kid’s cookbook.

It’s hard to interpret Gunther’s expression in the final panel is implying anything other than that he is crushed at the possibility of losing his crush.

Gunther wants Quill around because Q is cool and popular with the girls. Gunther is hoping some of that coolness will rub off on him. G is probably asexual, too uncomfortable with his own body to get naked with either gender.

Where is it written that a strip can have only one gay character? Maybe Greg Evans introduced the Fire Dept. Captain (a minor role) as a test, and finding that no newspapers dropped the strip as a result of it, he is now willing to portray one of the “major” characters as gay? Or even two of them?-Suppose that over the course of the coming year Gunther and Quill find that they have deep feelings for each other. That then allows the both of them to be dropped from consideration as Luann’s suitors, and then she can move on to new relationships when she starts in at Pitt Community College next fall. This strip needs a break from the past, so that long-time fans (on this list, and elsewhere) will stop calling for Luann to get back together with Gunther, or with Quill. It’s time for Luann to put high school behind her, after all these years.
RobinHood2013 about 11 years ago
Is it me or did Gunther sound a little like the late Desi Arnaz?
“¡Aiyiyi! ¡Él va a salir después de una comida!”
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Evans addressed Gunther’s sexuality some time ago in his discussion of his feelings for Rosa with Luann. He’s NOT gay.
I didn’t think so, either, but his response this morning might, to the uninformed, give a different perception. ;-) I just hope it’s not one of those cases where Gunther’s in “denial,” and is covering himself with Rosa for “misdirection” reasons. Lots of gay men marry heterosexually (and even have children) to get adequate cover.
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
Shy high school students are often kind of lonely. Also, they lack a good source of information about growing up (friends). [I speak from experience.]*Plus, Quill is a popular, cook kid & Gunther probably was hoping some of his coolness would rub off on him.*So yeah, he’s trying to both impress Quill and use him.
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
And thanks for catching the “queue” error yesterday. Actually, it was just a test to see who knew! ;)
sarafaye about 11 years ago
The only times I’ve seen Knute cross dress it was to impress a girl.

It makes sense that Gunther’s normal usual anxiety would be worse in the presence of his mother, since she is certainly the one who modeled and nurtured that behavior in his life.
seismic-2 Premium Member about 11 years ago
Mom! You can’t serve a “Sissy” meal to an Aussie surfer dude! (And is Greg finally trying to create a personality for Quill, by telling us that he surfs?)
imbaldeagle about 11 years ago
Not having a father to guide him,… He may want Quill around not for any bromance, but so that he can watch how he behaves and handles different situations… demonstrating how guys act.Agreed, that’s why I used the term “wingman” though that does not adequately describe what you’ve so ably written.

Um cul, is a vulgar term for you ‘behind’. 57 years old, speaking French all my life. Born in Belgium. I know of what i speak of.
Then be very careful with your context. In America, “Tail” can also mean “Behind/derierre/posterior,” as you say.
sarafaye about 11 years ago
Or “surfer” is Guntherese for “blond with a tan.”
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
Gunther wants his mom to be cool. As he imagines Quill’s mom is. But wait, G-man, 99% of mothers are un-cool, in the opinion of their kids. (Actually, 100% in my world, but I’m guessing someone out there thought their moms were hip.)

Geez, gang, I’m not up to reading 135 more comments :- P because it’s kind of late in the day, but I’m betting on Quill being an adept cook himself. Throw another shrimp on the barbie, and all that.

Congrats on being first once! I know I never will be, I am always asleep when it goes up!

I was first once in a while, back when, because I’m usually up and listening to interviews on the net around the time the comics refresh. I’ve been at the new comic when there were no comments, and didn’t leave one myself. Neither has happened for quite a while now.

I’ll be very glad to drop all the soy “meats” and get back to the real thing (and whole eggs too). I had an egg white omelet yesterday – not too bad with around 12gm of sliced raw garlic, some sweet red pepper diced fine and a handful of soy bacon bits. The hot dogs are OK if you fix them with good mustard, relish and raw onion (still not all that healthy. I really have no problem with good meat that has been properly raised and fixed. I love good rare grass fed filet or even thin-sliced rare roast flank steak. I can wait until February for that, no problem.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
As much as DW runs at the mouth, he gave an accurate description about what you have to do to be first. ^That is not entirely accurate! I don’t claim to be an IT genius, but there are other ways to view a page. Many sites have “scripts” that use buttons and hyperlink like GoComics does. I use the “home” button at the top, to take me to my comics page. There is also a button marked “today” on the home comics page for a person’s personalized comics page (It may just appear on the “Pro” page, I don’t know.). There’s also the “hyperlink” for the title “Luann” (underlined, at the top) that one can click on. Same thing on the home page, when the personalized page gets the new strips for the day. I do not have to use “refresh”. The site itself provides the “shortcuts”. – Also, I am a very fast reader and typist. I learned to type fast through practice and school, and through use on the job, as an office clerk. But it doesn’t matter how a person types or even with “cut and paste”, I have no control over the order of comments. Luann and Nancy are the first on my personalized comics pages. When I comment on those and Luann Againn (the word “againn”, here, is not a typo.), I just happen to be first. I have even waited several minutes for someone to comment ahead of me here. When no one has, I just go ahead… I comment on 12-14 strips each day. The others, I’m not first on, because someone else is first on those. And on them, it usually is the same people, there. And no one complains on those about the people always being first. As much as people are tired of me being first, I am tired of talking about it. Someone that wants to be, then go ahead! I truly wished that one could get through the day without anyone caring about what order anyone comes in. Can’t we just stop worrying about who’s first, second, third, whatever?
JayBluE about 11 years ago
Wasn’t directing it at you, Lev, but it was on my mind, and as I was thinking about it, I was typing it, to get it off of my chest, in general.
ORMouseworks about 11 years ago
I guess what’s to say has been said already…Quill and tofu? Who knows, stranger things have happened in Luanniverse… Hang in there, guys, its almost the witching hour… ;)
overtherainbow about 11 years ago
Yeah, Iam, I’m sure you’re sick of it, too. I’m just bemused, since I’m actually up most evenings around the time the comics refresh. In the spirit of scientific inquiry, several times now I’ve refreshed my page every one minute, and between one refresh and the next, the comic’s up and you have posted. I’m actually puzzled how that works. Just saying.
