Wow, Tiff gave a compliment. Let me check to see if hell froze over.

I just HAD to post something……..this is the first time ever I’ve gotten within 3 of first.

I think that with Luann’s help, Tiff could turn out OK! There is always hope.

Speaking of brave, I hope all of our current and former military members had a great Veterans’ Day.

To me, this shows that Tiffany utilizes a protective mechanism of being unsympathetic, possibly out of fear of being hurt for showing care, for showing herself vulnerable… for just the mere feeling of needing to protect herself… she may want to act differently, at times, but she’s probably just so stuck in this mode (out of habit) or so afraid, that she must take “baby steps”….

And I think there’s a normally very warm place where the temperature just dropped to 31 degrees.

I sure wish there was a ‘like’ button for some of these comments.

Time for the back story on Tiffany. I’m sure she’s had a load of hurt, somewhere along the line. Her character reveals a deep self-esteem problem, doesn’t it.

This is a lot more interesting than last week’s (non-)story about Quill’s job on TJ’s lunch wagon. We may get some insight into why Tiffany is so reluctant to let her guard down and get involved with the kids’ little problems. As for Quill’s cooking – who cares?

Tiffy is so selfish……Good thing Luann is around.

These are more like the stories I was hoping to see with Luann and Tiffany working together. Much better than the stuff about having the kids do her decorating.

Then Luann pulls out the hacksaw to amputate… ;)

I’m…. with Tiffany on this one. The kid will live.

Man up, Leo! Miss DeGroot will take care of your booboo, and Miss Farrell will observe and make gratuitous remarks. Maybe she’ll tell us more about herself than she realizes.

Tiff has been growing up for quite some time now. It seemed to start when Quill set her straight. But you look at her interactions with Ox a few months ago, she was polite and friendly to him. Cheerleaders like Tiff usually don’t have the time of day for big dopey kids, yet she let him put her on his shoulders in the pool. It has been a fun year so far watching these characters evolve. The only thing I find hard to believe is TJ wanting to give up the cooking in his business. Doesn’t take sense. He is smart enough to know that Quill won’t do it as well as he did and his business will suffer because of it. Plus, cooking is TJ’s passion. That arc is unbelievable to me, having followed TJ’s character for so long.

My friend says, “Hurt people, hurt people.”

I have seen pigs fly today and I heard that Hell ordered ice skates and snow shovels.

She must have a challenging relationship with her parents. Has she ever shown any real compassion for anyone?

Tiffany, welcome… to the real world.

CLEARING a Minefield???

I hope Lu and Tiff can come to a bit of an “equilibrium” in re: their respective approaches to this scenario. I suspect since Tiff has led such a pampered life, she doesn’t know (or recall) how it feels to have been hurt as a child like this. Hence, the chilliness. She could warm up just a little.

OTOH, Lu is all about sympathy… perhaps, even empathy. But perhaps a bit too much. If she lays it on too thick with the kids, they might sense that as being a bit patronizing. Not that Lu actually means it that way, but the kid perceives it that way. I think she did OK this time, but just stay cautious. As these kids have already demonstrated, they can have excellent BS meters! Be calm, “professionally sympathetic” and fix the problem.

Maybe Lu and Tiff can both help each other learn something!

just to say that if I could read only one comic, this would be it, and I can’t imagine where Greg is going with this storyline… thanks, Greg… also seldom, if ever, saw a new storyline begin in the middle of a week

The girls are growing up.

Is Tiff going to evolve? Are they going to be friends? Or at least not bitter enemies?

Luann may have found her true calling.

I wonder if that was really a compliment. I think maybe Tiff equates “brave” with “masculine”.

So … are we discovering something about Tiffany’s family here ..?

An old rule of thumb says we learn everything we know about parenting ..er .. child care by the time we are six. Maybe Tiffany didn’t have much in the way of parenting. Maybe, like Topsy, she just ‘growed’.

In a sense, the “growth” here is Greg Evans’. Rather than just using Tiffany merely as a cardboard cut-out at which he regularly hurls one beanbag after another, maybe now he will add some dimension to her story and make her less of a stock character, As I pointed out yesterday, he has created a contradictory role for Tiffany to play in this strip – she is meant to be the stereotype of the “popular” girl, the cheerleader whom the boys all adore and whom the girls all envy. In fact, no one likes her, and until Ox came along no boys seemed to express any interest at all. She has one close friend, who constantly belittles her. Maybe Evans sees the difficulties he has created for himself by making Tiffany so unlikeable and unliked, and he will now make her role more realistic by recognizing her strengths that are worthy of admiration and her weaknesses that are deserving of sympathy. That’s what separates the writers from the hacks.

Wow, look at that!Whenever Tiffany gives an actual compliment to Luann, an angel earns her wings!

Reminds me of how some of the worst people through junior and high school began to turn into real human beings our senior year, 30 years ago, knowing that the day was coming fast when things would never be the same.

One thing no one has brought up—“brave” is an odd adjective to use describing cleaning up an injury. What does everyone think Tiff meant by it?

I’ve never had any luck with that blog. I only seem to get one written by Karen about fireworks, so I’ve given up on it.

Then again, I remember when I was 8 or 9, and the little sister of our “gang”, hurt her arm and started crying. We were sure she was just being a baby—but it was broken!

Pigs flying around certainly would fit with Tiffany’s personal example of how to build a wall…. – The “flying pig album” (“Animals”) sort of tackles this in a way, too… with allegories between Pigs, Dogs, and Sheep…. the concepts of going with the flow or thinking for yourself… or surviving the persecution (Dogs vs. Sheep, and vs. Pigs, to some extent…)

I would hate to see Tiff go.

But for Tiff to stay and be a good foil for Lu, she would have to follow Lu to wherever Lu is going (Pitts Comm. College?). Is that a viable scenario? Or are we just “avoiding the inevitable” with her?

Maybe it is Tiff’s time. Hopefully, redemption time.

Could Karen be attempting to change that a little?

Maybe once Luann enrolls in Pitt Community College, her high school classmates who go elsewhere to a 4-year college (Bernice, Delta, Rosa) and those who don’t go to college at all (Knute, Tiffany) will become “recurring guest stars” in the strip, partying with Luann on holidays and seeing her sometimes when they’re home visiting, but they will be replaced in most of the strips by a new bunch of 18- to 20-year-olds. Of course, most of the focus could be on Luann’s love life (it certainly won’t be on her classroom studies!), so maybe we won’t see much at all of the students at Pitt CC.

I’ve seen enough of Crystal to know she is smart. Luann is smart with children. Brilliant in fact, she is lucky to maintain a C average in school. Tiff’s strength is in maintaining herself and in cosmetology.

But, unless she’s a “Raquel Welch” or “Sofia Loren,” she won’t be able to do that forever, and will need some kind of support when her physical appearance won’t do it anymore.

Hope she learns that lesson in time.

Luann has to have an enemy to oppose her. If not, almost half the story lines will disappear. Tiffany is already established and has a large anti-fan group, saving Mr. Evans the need to create an entirely new character.

I’m thinking it’s Karen that may want to create that new character (foil for Lu). Or, maybe Lu no longer needs that kind of “foil.”

We’ll see.
