Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for February 28, 2014
Transcript:
Goat: So, Jef the Cyclist, now that you're wearing a cape, does that make you a superhero? Jef: I'm afraid not, Goat. For, while we both may wear spandex, there's a big difference between a cyclist and a superhero. Goat: How so? Jef: One of us has special powers and can save the world. The other's just a superhero. Goat: You should leap off a tall building, Jef. Jef: Hush, mortal.

I wonder if Captain Douchebag is faster than a speeding bullet.:Letâs shoot one at him and see.
favm almost 11 years ago
Modesty is not one of his special powers.
inshadowz almost 11 years ago
I bet he can stop a speeding bullet. Once.

Jeff is a real bicyc-hole. (Riding on the bus on the way home, another member of this species tried to swerve around the bus. He almost learned a lesson in physics, about conservation of momentum.)

Unless itâs short for el JefeâŠ

Be kind â itâs Jefâs birthday today! :)

Why does so much of the action here take place by a coffee shop counter?
Brass Orchid Premium Member almost 11 years ago
Life is too short to be marred by the illusion of perfection.
doublepaw almost 11 years ago
He must have been riding without a helmet at times.
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
Jef, I donât care what powers you do or donât have; just go take a flying leap!

Goat has the right idea.

Arye Uygur: The reason much of this strip takes place at a coffee shop counter is most of action in this strip is takes place in what has been called the Pearlsâ Diner..Todayâs action: While Goat may have the right idea, isnât that usually Ratâs line?.I used to be a bicyclist before my bike got stolen. One very unfortunate thing is that, while there may be rather few people like Jef out there, most drivers treat all of us as if all of us were JefâŠ

I hope Jeff catches a crosswind with his cape while cycling.

Itâs funny that Frazz is the next strip in my line.
NoCents almost 11 years ago
Jef already got the F out of there.

Diner: I read somewhere (comment/interview with Pastis?) that he canât draw food well, hence the coffee and empty plates.

I really, really want to be there when that cape catches in the sprocket.

I find Jef hilarious. I donât actually know anyone like him and Iâve known a lot of cyclers. Rat, on the other hand, is a dime a dozen on the internet. I actually find the offense everyone is taking from Jef even more hilarious, though. And compound this based off of the fact that Jef is probably the stand in for Jef Mallett (Frazz), and it becomes even more absurd because heâs nothing like this either!
VICTOR PROULX almost 11 years ago
They should post this series in bike shopsâŠbut I fear the cyclists would not get it.

I hesitate to ask about the âwindâ source blowing his cape in the last panel.

Goat finally gets to be a smart ass???

Love how the cape comes up in the last frame.I think I want to get a cycling jersey with that lightning bolt design!
armstrmb almost 11 years ago
Why does his cape keep billowing?
Number Three almost 11 years ago
If he did that, Rat would be behind him the whole time ready to âpush him over the edgeâ

It is lucky that he is not humble. Perfection is not safe for mere mortals.
jeffiekins almost 11 years ago
âSo it is unfortunate, but yes the few cyclists who do think they are gods or superheroes do give the rest a bad reputationâ
I donât think they think theyâre super-powered; I just think theyâre jerks. (And I used to commute by bike, and probably will again.)
No matter where you go, you will always find some jerks. And statistically, you may indeed find more among bicyclists and Prius drivers, for the same reason: look up âMoral Licenseâ if you want to see some research on the subject; itâs quite interesting.

I know this has been going on for quite a while, but what has Pastis got against the Frazz cartoonist? Iâve never seen an explanation. I find it a little distressing and disappointing.

I hope Stephan kills this guy off soon, really really soon.

More and more people take a bike.Somebody has taken mine.
knight1192a almost 11 years ago
Take his advice Cyclist Jeff. Maybe on the way down youâll realize how lame you really are and how real cyclists laugh at your ineptness.

What kind of superhero has to stay on the bike path?
