Come on, Shannon! I want to hear more about the Captain retiringâŠand You are getting tiring Already! ;)

Toni has Shannon well trained to help keep Brad from getting too intimate. This seems to make it more likely that she will in fact ask Brad to adopt Shannon as soon as they get married, for that same purpose.
jemgirl81 about 11 years ago
@ORmouseworks: Couldnât agree with you more. They need to set her up on play dates with other little kids. It would be good for her.
ORMouseworks about 11 years ago
Its my understanding that they just want to wait until they get marriedâŠsome people actually do this. Of course, they want to be intimate, but Iâm guessing Greg wants them to wait⊠;)

Iâm of the opinion they have been and continue to be intimate offscreen, but Greg thinks coitus interruptus is extremely funny, so he keeps making a point of it.

Ugh. It sounds like theyâre building up for them to be competing for a promotion. Not that either of them is remotely senior enough, but this is comic strip land where they may have been working at this job a lot longer than theyâve been working at this job.

Iâm on the fence with this one⊠;)

Itâs possible that she just wanted to let him know that she thinks of him, when she wears his fav color.. We as men hear certain things, and itâs automatic. Sometimes, women just like to keep a guyâs interest piqued, but not always âgoing thereâ ⊠â Women can say and think in one way, but we guys will hear and think âsomething elseââŠ.

Since they have to share their âQuality Time", with each other, and now with Shannon, it makes me think of some songs related to viewing time as valuable commodity:
âTimeâ, Pink FloydâNo Time This Timeâ, the PoliceâTime Stand Stillâ, RushâTme In A Bottleâ, Jim CroceâNo Timeâ, the Guess WhoâGive Me Just A Little More Timeâ, the Chairmen Of The BoardâTime Has Come Todayâ, the Chambers BrothersâTomorrow Never Knowsâ, BeatlesâDoes Anybody Really Know what Time it Isâ ChicagoâToo Much Time on My Handsâ StyxâTime Passagesâ Al Stewart

Politics, period. I think they are intimate, but perhaps not as often as theyâd like. I have the feeling also that Jonah doesnât pay much attention to her, so when he dumps her on Toni, she tries to make up for lost time, especially since she knows that Brad is such a soft touch.
bluejedi79 about 11 years ago
so when is Toni gonna say âBrad, weâre pregnantâ?

@ORmouseworks: Oh yeah, youâre right. I forgot about their crazy firefighter schedules. Lol

Suck it up, Shannon! You can last five minutes, and itâs about time for you to learn that, contrary to your current opinion, the world does not revolve around you. Itâs too bad your father (unfortunately, only in the biological sense) hasnât had time (irony) to teach you that.
Fly On The Wall about 11 years ago

Ya know⊠Maybe I am starting to think that Shannon is Gregâs âBirth Control DeviceâŠâ {sigh}
Anyway, as stated above, The âcaptainâ retiring may be something to keep an eye on. Weâll see. Otherwise, I think they just have to find a way to have more private time without Shannon getting dumped on them.
Maybe Lu/Nancy/Frank to the resuce there!

StoicLion1973 about 11 years ago
With the Captainâs retirement, could there be changes at Bradâs (?) station? Both are too young to be promoted to Captain, but this could lead to some interesting development.
seismic-2 Premium Member about 11 years ago
A vacancy in the officersâ ranks shouldnât have any impact on the firefighters (who in many departments have to be promoted to 1st class, senior, master, and driver, based on years of seniority). The only impact would be that a lieutenant fills the captainâs slot, and a firefighter has to be promoted to lieutenant. That promotion would require many more years of service than Toni or Brad have (even put together), so yeah, thatâs probably what will happen, by-passing all the other firefighters in Pitt who have worked at their jobs for years or even decades longer. Welcome to the Luannverse, guys!

> donât you get tired of spouting the same old drivel?>Doesnât Greg Curtis get tired of drawing it? As others have pointed out, how many times has Shannon interrupted them now? Itâs clearly by design (Gregâs, and probably Toniâs).
seismic-2 Premium Member about 11 years ago
Sorry, I was reading the âCurtisâ strip just now, and it stuck in my brain (or fingers). Yes, I know that the cartoonist of âLuannâ is named Evans (and the cartoonist of âCurtisâ is named Billingsley).

By the way, TV, while oft used for the purpose, is a poor babysitter.
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
What about Brad/Toni makes them good foster parents? In the past two comics, Brad is openly disgusted that Shannon is there and then they want her to leave them alone for a while.
If you look back at some of the previous strips, youâll see that Brad and Shannon have had some very excellent encounters together, when theyâre alone. Brad actually has some very decent parenting skills, when heâs able to demonstrate them. Heâs been able to get Shannon to comply with things.. perhaps even more so than Toni, who might appear to Shannon as the âestablishedâ authority figure (the âheavyâ), always to be challenged.
Meh~tdology, fka Pepelaputr about 11 years ago
Instant gratification means you never have to wait.
ACTIVIST1234 about 11 years ago
Toni, since asking nicely doesnât work, TELL Shannon to watch TV!
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
The extreme responses on Shannon are kind of fascinating. On the one hand, we have those who condemn her as a manipulative brat who should be shut into a dark, padded closet with a deadbolt on it, or at the very least, slapped upside the head.-On the other hand, we have those who have a knee-jerk response toward Brad and Toni, and condemn them for wanting time together instead of demonstrating love for Shannon by catering to her every whim.-I suspect that the truth (if there is one) is somewhere in between. Shannon behaves well when she feels like she matters, and Brad and Toni both do care about her. But they also want some together time, which they donât get when they unexpectedly become Shannonâs babysitters.-Since we have adopted kids in my family and I know that there are challenges with this option, I would actually not favor a young couple just getting started as adoptees, unless they were highly motivated.
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen about 11 years ago
Nope, you are misreading it again.Saying she is dfiving you nuts is not the same as saying you ard miserable or that she is not loved.I bet conversations with you are fun.âHe says he likes blue?? That must mean he hates my shoes, me and America.âSomething like that.

Is Shannon ever going to get any older? Why is she the olny one who never ages?
Maltabride2010 about 11 years ago
Sheâs a typical kid, and she cracks me up!
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Regardless of how he interacts with her, he is never happy when Toni shows up with her.
I donât think he blames Shannon for that. I think he blames either Jonah for causing the situation, and/or Toni for allowing it happen (secondarily), because it means less time alone with Toni. I donât think it affects how Brad feels about Shannon, herself.
That Said:
Shannon is a burden on both of them. Again, I wonder why they would adopt her when they donât apeear to have enough time for each other. They are NOT ready for kids.
If Shannonâs father decides he canât handle Shannon and is considering adoption, he should let a foster family take her that has both the time and love that Shannon needs. Brad/Toni donât really have either for her.
I actually agree that itâs way too early for Brad & Toni to be raising a child. But they may not have much of a choice if Jonah foists the scenario upon them.
It all comes down to how much they love Shannon and see potential in her⊠potential that could come to full fruition if they did adopt her, and (conversely) waste away, or worse, if they remand her to the foster care system. How much do Brad & Toni consider Shannon âfamily,â and would they abandon a âfamilyâ member like that? Having lost both her parents, Iâm thinking Toni would not abandon her, if the issue were actually forced. She is âfamily.â And, because Brad does seem to do very well with Shannon, and theyâve started to bond, I donât think heâd object either, in that case. I just hope it doesnât turn out to be the case, because they really do need some time alone to do all those things newlyweds do. Raising children should be a bit more towards the latter part of their timeline. Not all the way at the end, but also not at the very beginning, either.

How do you know it was whiskey?
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
-Captain Newman-Wonder why that name was picked? Could it be that Greg is a fan of the 1963 movie in which Gregory Peck played that character? Or maybe the Leo Rosten novel that the movie is based on?-Or it could be a total coincidenceâŠ.
David Huie Green LikeNobody'sEverSeen about 11 years ago
Not every interaction with a child need be considered parenting.Unplanned interruptions and irritation at same is not same as disdane at chilt.Further, TJ and Shannon get along well or else he âhides his disdainâ well. And most cheered the fingervore action, not because they wish my beloved Shannon to misbehave, but we like rude people who stick their fingers in childrenâs faces to regret said action.. When my son was full of energy, usually as he fought sleepiness, I had him load dishes, run the dishwasher, load clothes, wash clothes, dry clothes, fold and store clothes, unload the dishwasher all the while engaging him in his subject of the day until such time as he realized, "Iâm sleepy, " and went to bed..Heâs a world-class adult now.

The reason this strip receives the most comments when Toni and Brad are the subject is because we want to see more about a possible sex life! Greg, at least let us see her in a bikini or baby doll! Where is the love?

That is the way a child acts if she is much younger than her siblings. She wants to be included. She wants attention. A third party, Mom or Dad, would usually put the child in her place, but there is no third party here to do it.
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
Just to show how very differently people react to this strip: only one comment on the ArcaMax site today is about Shannon and her possible brattiness. And none of the comments are about whether Toni and Brad are involved in more than holding hands. The rest of the comments are about how adults perceive the passage of time so differently from kids.
