My wife and I had two weddings. One small and one big.Or rather, we had a wedding, for legal paperwork and all, and later we had a wedding party with friends from all over the country coming to celebrate with us. And since the WedCon (as we called it) was just for us, we had a friend who roleplayed an elven viking priestess officiate for us, in costume of course. Praise Odin and Pass the Ale.

We had a tiny wedding. With the money saved, we were able to make a major down payment on a house. We are both frugal and just celebrated our 27th! Yeah, some were pissed…so what, it wouldn’t have been THEM paying the bills!

However, if these people invited all their relatives we’ve ever even heard of, much less seen, that would be maybe a dozen people? Add everyone Brad knew from high school and assuming Toni didn’t know any more people at her school than Brad did at his, then add their co-workers from the Fire Department, and we’re still at under 50 people, right?

I have three sons, and I hated having to only invite a few relatives. That meant leaving out a lot of people. I wanted all my siblings and their spouses and their children and their spouses to come. So what if it meant I would have to fork out enough for an extra room and food. I was willing to pay for it. In the end I did pay for about half of the cost of the weddings, and one thought I should pay for the honeymoon, too. We had only enough relatives at the wedding to fill one regular size table. After two weddings, I hope my unmarried son takes off to Reno or Tahoe and skips all that wedding planning.

It does not matter what others did. Seek good sound advice, then decide as a couple what is the best thing for couple to do. You may think as two, but each half must come together to as one.

“I spent hours making this dress, and after two hours it is time to take it off.”~“But a marriage is forever.”~That was me complaining, and the response was the housekeeper of the parish house. ~Forty-one years later, my marriage is still strong, but the gown is stored in a foot locker. The lace has yellowed, but those long weekend hikes we take together are still fun. ~Was the cost of the wedding worth it? Maybe. We did get a nice toaster from my aunt.

To get back into the topic of small weddings vs. large ones. My experience was a very small wedding. We paid for everything as we went, and only had about 15-20 people there…all first tier relatives and very close friends. My sister made my dress, I purchased cold cuts and such for the party, and everyone enjoyed themselves. The best part was the wedding ceremony…and the venue, which was a very, very small church in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. Would do it again for sure! ;)

When I got married the third time, I told my love she could have whatever size wedding she wanted – after all, I’d done a big one the first time, a small one the second time, and this was her first. She picked the courthouse, with her folks, my folks, and her sister & brother-in-law as Matron of Honor and (since I liked him as a bro-in-law too) Best man.18 years later, it STILL works out great. What matters is the love before, during, and after, dammit!
