Mike: Have you been down to visit Joanie at the day care center? Mark: No... how's her new job coming? Mike: Okay, I guess... she's been administering consciousness raising sessions to the girls... Mark: Terrific! Mike: I dunno... Joanie may be asking too much of little girls of that age. Mark: Nonsense! I'm sure she's handling it beautifully. Girl: Waah! I don't wanna be a building contractor! Joanie: Now, dear...

Herewith the problem of pushing too hard in the other direction from âgirls must only want to be wives and mothers.â

Most little boys of that age would have exactly the same reaction to that job too⊠not really a matter of asking too much of little girls.
When was this? Weâre watching original Star Trek at the moment â which was quite progressive for its time â and my daughter is stunned by the sexism. I think she wants to be Scotty ;-)

1972, original Star Trek was about five years earlier, back when miniskirted uniforms were a sign of progress!

Good idea: Encouraging options for girls. Bad idea: Shoving options down their throats.

Caligulla said, yesterday, @QuiteDragon:
âAnd why, in your world, does someone have to be poor and black to earn anything?â
Your reading comprehension needs improvement. I said no such thing.âBoth my parents were civil servants and everything I have I earnedâŠâ
You prove my actual, stated point (and contradicted yourself in one sentence): What your parents have is the âgroundâ from which you started. You did not earn that; that is you had a âboost upâ. You may have earned what came after, but you did not start with on an even field with one who had nothing and it is blind hubris to say otherwise.kaffekup almost 11 years ago
âBoth my parents were civil servants".Who, if they were other peopleâs parents, would magically become âOverpaid bureaucrats feeding at the public trough.â

The reboot of Battlestar Galactica had me worried. Especially them having a female Starbuck. Of course it wound up being amazing. Plus you got a woman president.

For those who may not know, the girl in panels 1-3 is Nichole.I remember her, but she was pushed very far back in my memory.

-Hey, Bwana, Majel Hudec Barreth Roddenberry, attended University of Miami here in Florida and acted in regional theater before she left for Hollywood. She was in the Untouchables and the Lucy Show before she ever acted in any of the âTrekâ shows, and after Roddenberryâs death, she was executive producer of a show based on a previously unknown script of his. Pretty hard working for a âtrophy wifeâ.-And since she died in 2008, if sheâs simply standing around and looking pretty, sheâs doinâ that in Heaven. A hater like you wonât get the chance to confirm that yourself, so I figured Iâd better let you know. Iâm sure her son wouldnât bother.

There seems to be different definitions of âTropy Wifeâ. I am recently reading that it means âGold Diggerâ, but that is not what I remember hearing when the term first came about. I always thought a Tropy Wife was more along these lines, "She is usually beautiful & may be younger than Hubby. She is also educated, socially skilled & âaccomplished.â In the old days, accomplishments were fancy sewing, playing an instrument & speaking French; now, athletic skills & the right sort of volunteer work are what count. She might workâas an entrepreneur or as a professional. But she will have time to look good on Hubbieâs arm as he moves in more rarefied circles."

âIâm sure sheâs handling it beautifullyâ â or maybe not :(As âloves raising Duncanâ said â encouraging is good, shoving down the throat not so good.

More than that. Majel Barrett managed to be on every Star Trek series. And most of the movies. .Listen to the computer voice. It was Majelâs.

I remember her. Years later, when Mike was married to whatâs-her-name, they were all at a Walden reunion. Nichole was hotly dressed, and tried to seduce Mike. Mike didnât bite, though.

Donât forget about Babylon 5 â Majel Barrett had a great guest role in the series. She was only in one episode, but had a great impact (and did an excellent job as the very powerful and intelligent Lady Morella). But I will always love her as Lwaxana Troi in TNG (it was when she started guest starring that we got to see a more interesting side to Deanna Troi).
