Miss Phelps: "Have your told your students that you're retiring, Mr. Fogarty?"
Mr. Fogarty: "Yes. But they didn't listen, as usual-"
Students: "SURPRISE!"
(AHEM!!) – They’ had ol’ Fogs going!!! They were ReallyGood!! He’s ironically learning ‘the best lesson of all’! His impact may have taken a detour past some of their brains, but not their hearts! – Of course, you’re still going to have your “Negative Nellies”… those who think this wasn’t going to happen, as if it wasn’t the direction this was going, all along… – You don’t draw a strip for 29 years (or draw a character for even longer than that! ), and “just throw him to the wayside”!…..
“Farewell, Mr. Fogarty”“Tribute To A Teacher”“Sir, Prize Pupils!”“Fogarty’s ‘Lessen’ Plan, VIII: Return Investments”“♪…Teach Your Children Well…♪”or“Don’t Count Your Students Until They Graduate”
Once Again, for whatever reason, GoComics isn’t letting me “reply” to a post…Anyway, I don’t ever remember seeing this arc…spectacular for them! So, they really Do have lives outside of Pitts HS…now if you two would quit addressing each other using surnames…!!! ;)
Time to zone-out…this evening I have two quotes by Benjamin Disraeli (1804 – 1881):“No Government can be long secure without a formidable Opposition.” And, “Youth is a blunder; Manhood a struggle; Old Age a regret.” (I wonder if Fogarty has regrets about his personal life…) ;)
Most studunts would have treated him respectfully because most students are respectful unless one is in a school where most of the parents instructed their kids, “Don’t take nothin off that teacher.”
Mr. Fogarty is perhaps a bit more special to Greg Evans than he is to us readers, since Fogarty was created well before Luann. But yeah, I wish he’d get on with it.
wow, didn’t see that coming but glad that they did listen and let him know that he had made an impact on their lives. I had a favorite teacher and wish I could have been there when he retired. When he was my teacher I thought he was old but now I realize that he might have been in his early 30’s and taught for many years after our class graduated.
> That gag doesn’t work, as Luann may not be old enough to get married.>Didn’t mini-Elvis buy her an engagement ring? In California (where Luann lives) you can get a marriage license before you are 18, so long as a judge approves, you make an appointment for a counseling session, and you have one parent attend that session,
Whether they just wanted an excuse for a party or if they are truly sincere, that is totally sweet. I recall some of my classmates were planning to throw a party for our sixth grade homeroom teacher “because you are such a nice teacher.” She was really a mean teacher who would never get away with what she did to the students today. In fact, she would be arrested for shaking and striking her students. Yet, she was the only teacher we had who made certain every one of us in that over-crowded classroom of 48 students were included and participated in every lesson. We learned because of the teacher she was. In fact one of my classmates told me recently that she chose to be an English teacher because Mean Mrs. G. inspired her.
Luann: surprise! I married Aaron Hill this weekend!^That gag doesn’t work, as Luann may not be old enough to get married.^And also doesn’t work, as Aaron got “retired” a long time ago…. ask “Mount Wannahockaloogie”….
I do have to wonder if Mr. Evans is leading us up to his retirement and the end of the strip. Most of us want to retire after 30 years on the same job, and even more years drawing Mr. Fogarty (according to Wiki). At 67 I sure don’t want to have to still be working.
Oh, “Mr. Monocle”… is there no end to your turning everything into a “rainy day”? Even when the sun happens to be shining, and people are outside “collecting vitamin D”, would you dare to make them all feel guilty for it? Or remind them that it’s the same sun that has “burned them” in the past?
> Tiffany isn’t saying anything and she has already established herself as the master event planner of the high school, so I have the feeling this is a Tiffany-sponsored occasion.>You could well be right about that. Note that she is standing underneath the banner with a definite expression of pride, so it seems that this just might be her doing. (“Look what I did!”) Mr. Fogarty should take at least some pride in it too, since the banner is spelled correctly, so he did teach them a little bit in any case! (Imagine how he would feel if it said “Fairwell!” or “Well miss you!”)
Did you know most cartoonists work 6-8 weeks ahead of publication? With my dad scheduled for surgery and graduation looming for the characters, the Fogarty Flashbacks allowed us to: 1. Highlight Fogarty and life at Pitts high school before Graduation 2. Introduce readers to the www.gocomics.com archives where fans enjoy browsing past storylines. 3. Give my dad a break from full-time illustrations after surgery (he’s fully recovered now )
Enjoy this final week which will link to some memorable full story arcs….and then, on to Graduation! ~Karen Evans (Greg’s daughter)
This is almost too late for anyone to notice, and I haven’t read the 80 after this, but I did call this strip last Wednesday:
Gokie5 said, 5 days ago
I’ve been pretty busy up here, so missed earlier days’ comments. But I’m voting on today’s students throwing a special party to honor Mr. Fogarty in his retirement. We’ll see how that plays.
I remember that arc. Who could forget it after reading it even years later. There was another one where she had him wear a kilt and suggested she would find out if anything is worn underneath. Too bad the worst of the arcs are the ones one remembers.
GROAN. Now I’m not even to welcome to complain about a borrrring Fogarty arc, because of what poor Greg Evans went through. Have a smooth recovery, dude!-I might however complain if there’s a dumb boring arc in the future, because I have a mind of my own. I even complain when I don’t like a favorite writer’s latest novel or a favorite TV show’s latest episode. Darn it all, why can’t I just be a humble sheep…
The personality of the middle and high school student changes radically from IN-CLASS to OUT OF CLASS. While often class is just a hard grind in the disciplines, outside the kids like you as a teacher and can actually miss you if you are absent. I loved being teacher, but it was an emotional roller-coaster. (for 45 years)
“I’ve a strong hunch that the rest of this week’s arc will be devoted to showing us all just how Mr. Fogarty impacted the Luann Gang.”-—————————————————Could we not?
“If you could find a comic where he makes an impact on them, I’d be happy to read it. All I see are flashbacks where he is not respected at all.”^Or maybe all that you’d want to see…
“Gunther, Bernice, and Rosa are all overachievers that would have been fine regardless of the teacher.”^That’s not true. Learning isn’t one size fits all, and even an “overachiever” or a “genius” or a “gifted student” still requires insight, direction and positive influence… along with someone who can help “bring order to chaos”, to quote a Borgian term….

Looks like Fogarty gets a 2 week arc. At least it’s not as bad as he feared.

I don’t know why he should think that they didn’t pay attention. Doesn’t he remember that roof-raising cry of “YAY!!!” when he told them?

Oh, OK…I thought that arc was Great!!! Maybe Ms. Phelps will have a part in Fogarty’s retirement?

Only in a comic strip will one teacher teach the same classmates from 7th grade up through high school.
