Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for May 27, 2014
Transcript:
Quill: "Ok, you're upset that I put my theater job ahead of you. But that's my future, Luann! Anyway, we're together now, so" Luann: "Great! Too bad our time together keeps shrinking!" Quill: "Then maybe we shouldn't waste it" Luann: "You think discussing us is a waste of time?!" Quill: "Noooo. This is real fun. We should argue more often" Luann: "It's better than not even seeing each other!" Quill: "Is it?"

Looks like weâre at Appomattox⊠and âterms of surrenderâ are non-negotiable! â This discussion could be about a cell phone plan: the customers arenât valued, thereâs too much roaming, and a lot of shrinkage⊠or someone finds their calls are getting dropped, minutes are getting expensive, and an âupgradeâ means something different to one than the otherâŠ. â This doesnât seem like the time to go up and ask either one of them for five bucks, is it?

Interesting all of you are picking on LuAnn. She is supposed to be satisfied with whatever bone he wants to throw her? He doesnât sound concerned at all about her concerns. Sounded as if he was in no hurry yesterday. Couldnât even see she already had a coffee. Work Is important. But, not as important as the one you claim to love! Well, this isnât good at all for Lu & Q. I guess the question then becomes, who becomes the âdumperâ vs. the âdumpeeâŠâ
Iâm leaning more towards Q dumping Lu. I think it will lend much more drama to the story than if Lu dumps him. Then she can kvetch about it for the next few strips. Hopefully, the people that surround her will set her straight. It just seems like sheâs not going to get out of her funk for a while, so she has to accept responsibility for the consequences.

It seems unlikely that there is only one drama school in this entire country for Quill to attend . In fact there have to be drama schools in Australia. We have only seen one passionate moment in this romance and it must not have made little impression on him to repeat this experience. Neil Sedeca. âBREAKING UP IS HARD TO DOâ

It takes 2 to make a relationship work. Quill is far too busy making a career for himself and Luann wants more time with her boyfriend and he wonât do it. Best if they go their own way for a while.

There seems to be quite a change in reaction herein from the previous time that Luann pulled this âYou never think about me!â tantrum. Last time, a lot of the posted comments were denouncing Quill as a terrible, terrible person because he doesnât spend 24/7 obsessing over Luann. Has that change in reaction come about because people are finally getting fed up with Luannâs constant whining and want her simply to get over herself, or is it because they are so bored with Quill that they canât be bothered even to be angry at him any more?

Been following this strip for decades, but between the way Luann acted during the prom thing, and now this⊠showing her to be at almost the level of selfishness, self absorption and pettiness as Tiffany, I no longer like or respect Luann. Which means I no longer care to root for her. Which puts an end to my enjoyment of this strip.

How is the poor girl selfish for wanting to spend time with the one she loves? No wonder marriages are failing. All of you want Quill to do his own thing. And you call Her selfish! I call Him self-centered & not ready for a relationship! He needs to take up with Tiff. Sheâs a good match for him.

In defense of Luann, it is a hard thing to have to keep hoping and waiting to spend time with a boyfriend. Even though you want him to focus on his life and you donât want to get in his way, there is still that pain of a dashed hope every time he has to put something else ahead of time together.

Wow. From the comments on here I am not surprised that so many marriages end up the way they do!(40+ year old happy relationship and marriage here that started in High School.)
They BOTH have a point and they BOTH need to work at this. Luann has every right to expect to be treated with more consideration and importance in Quillâs life. (Maybe he can at least TRY to not leave her hanging and call when he has to?) Quill has every right to expect Luann to care about and take more interest in his chosen career. They would both need to show more caring about the other if this were a real relationship for it to last and be strong.

âNow if you donât like him messing up storylines worn a character he feels forced to use, thatâs not his fault.â-âââââââââââââââââIt IS Evansâ fault; he created the character, but couldnât be bothered to write properly for it. Quillâs a fairly stable, non-malicious, Delta-like personality (and whenâs the last time he wrote for her [and I donât mean the âFo-getty Flashbackâ], he didnât even finish her prom storyline). Perhaps because of this distinctive contrast to the stock âprat-fallâ bunch, Quill became a favorite that Evans couldnât just make âdsappearâ when the easy jokes didnât come to him.Right now, Luann is acting like a snot because sheâs not at Quillâs emotional level and is trying to drag him down to hers, risking losing ALL her time with Quill.Quillâs someone more likely to get Luann to move past the petty part of her personality (like, who was jealous when Gunther found Rosa after Luann had rejected him AGAIN?). moreso than advice from her mom or Mrs. Horner. In that same manner; if Evans canât work up a solution that doesnât involve simply making a character disappear, maybe Karenâs perspective can get it worked out.

The discussion of âhow much time can/should we spend togetherâ is one that certainly should be had, at a time when it can be calmly discussed with acknowledgement of both partiesâ needs and goals. Luann is screwing it up by bringing trying to have that large conversation now, when there is an immediate smaller irritation setting the wrong tone for the important discussion.
Letâs first deal with what I consider a valid complaint:âHey Quill, if youâre running late, Iâd really appreciate it if youâd shoot me a text so I donât worry that youâve forgotten our date or gotten hit by a car, ok?â
THEN, letâs have the serious discussion about future plans.
beachlvr Premium Member over 10 years ago
I am with Luann. Quill has a pattern of being late and not having any remorse. She needs to find someone who values her time. This has nothing to do with the fact that she also needs to grow up and be someone. Yes they are growing apart as well. Quill probably would be on time for someone who was capturing his interest.

dblbaraje over 10 years ago
They are both too young â Quill is level headed enough to know he is just learning his career and it is important to train. At least he knows what he wants in his lifeâs work. Luann, on the other hand, has absolutely no idea what she wants to do with her life (other than having a boy paying attention to her all the time). The timing is not right. Luann has a lot of growing up to do yet. Unless Luann and Quill learn to compromise, they are doomed. Also, Quill wants to be a actor which means NY or Hollywood. I donât see Luann leaving Pittsville yet.
muffin05 over 10 years ago
Just as we think Luanne is finally growing up, down she goes again. Now picking fights over nothing at all. She is mature just as long as her boyfriend remains without flaw and all her needs are being met. Since Quill has no time for self-centered women, he should move on. Let her go sobbing to Mrs. Horner what a victim she is because no one cares about her needs.

Whoâs to say Luann didnât arrive 15 minutes early?I donât know that she has a history of being particularly punctual herownself.
JayBluE over 10 years ago
Oh, theyâre communicating, alright! No holding back their âcore issuesâ, here! The failure here is their inability to âmeet in the middleâ. This is to be expected, though. Compromise is an art thatâs not learned overnight, unless one learns to appreciate it at a tender age. â Oh, the value of trade offs/give and take, and to view others (as well as themselves) objectivelyâŠ. -I fear, though, that both parties feel that their positions are ânon negotiableââŠ.. and in a way, that is fair. At their current stances, they are showing what is valuable to them. Itâs fair, as they are both communicating their positions and seem at this point to not have any room for other concessions. At this point, maybe both are prepared⊠to :seek opportunities elsewhereâŠ

JayBluE over 10 years ago
Unless Quill has cancelled on her a bunch, and itâs âone week here, then a month gone missingâ, I would think that he does make reasonable efforts. â In real life, I wouldnât want to tell two people to âstay togetherâ or âbreak upâ. My advice would just be to both of them to step back, and find an objective (and GREAT emphasis on objective) voice to help sort out the right way to proceed, or if either are âputting stock in the right thingsâ or even whether or not this should be a âmake or breakâ issueâŠ.

Very interesting that most comments here are slamming Luann and not Quill. His attitude (not alone among theater people) shows why love relationships, married or not, donât last. One party is put on the shelf and dusted off only when wanted.
Luann has a right to be pissed, and Quill is an inconsiderate self absorbed ass. That is not to say Luann often is, too.
seismic-2 Premium Member over 10 years ago
We have seen no incidences of Quillâs refusing to see Luann. (However, on what would have been an ideal occasion for them to spend a lot of time together, namely the Thanksgiving holiday, she left him behind so that she could take a long tour of a bunch of colleges, only to conclude after she got back that there was really no reason for the trip and she wouldnât attend any of them.) Today Quill is running 20 minutes late, but thatâs sufficient to provoke her wrath. Luann is âhigh maintenanceâ, to say the least.
Meh~tdology, fka Pepelaputr over 10 years ago
Evans could use some outside suggestions if his only solution to writerâs block vivi a vis a character is to kill it off rather than be creative.
