Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for May 28, 2014
Transcript:
Quill: "Know what I think? I think you envy me for being on a real track to a real goal" Luann: "OH! You're pursuing a "real" university career while I'm just flopping around at the junior college, is that it?" Quill: "I don't know. Is it?" Luann: "NO! I'm talking about us, Quill! Not ur careers!" Quill: "We're headed to college, Luann. We have to talk about both" Luann: "WHAT DOES FINDING TIME TO MAKE OUT HAVE TO DO WITH CAREERS?!"

vWell, Lu… you like kissin’ so much? Hope you bought the giant tube of gloss… cos if you’re not carefull, you’re about to kiss it all goodbye…. – Where you go to school isn’t the issue… and there’s beauty in holding hands in the park….but there’s more to life (and to love) than just… “making out” ….. – One kiss can be better than a thousand….

Luann, you’re Not Listening!!! ;)

Let’s hear more about this “flopping around” that Luann plans on doing at Pitt CC.

Waitaminit! Luann is not a loser!!!!
keema70 almost 11 years ago
Maybe Quill is avoiding the make-out sessions because things between him and Luann were getting very steamy. He might be worried about what might happen… Maybe she’s worried because she didn’t get into drama camp and doesn’t think that she could make it as an actress. She’s getting very theatrical now, though!
wrwallaceii almost 11 years ago
Priorities, Quill. priorities.

And now the truth comes out!
kenhense almost 11 years ago
Luann – It’s never enough. Hedge your bets.
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
You’re “kinda jumping the gun” though… – You’re calling her a loser before that “unfulfilling life” has unfolded! Having no goals is one thing… but you’re speaking as if it’s too late to change …..
Juan 2099 almost 11 years ago
Quill is acting a little cocky for somebody pursuing a career in drama. In four years, neither of them will have jobs.
JayBluE almost 11 years ago
Actually, in a funny way, “can” could work instead of “van”… -It is a sort of “canteen”….

Luann’s lack of planning for the future is why she’s going to Junior College, Quill. For example:
Angelalex242 almost 11 years ago
Quill’s patience is truly admirable. But I wonder if even he’s running out of it.
DaJellyBelly almost 11 years ago
If Luann was smart. She would stop whining and sit down with Quill and explain to him her goals in life and how she plans to attain them.
watmiwori almost 11 years ago
Actually, Luann makes as much sense as the “official” essay….
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
CC counselors do not have “only” one goal…it was a slip-up on my part… =-O
Juan 2099 almost 11 years ago
To be honest, I think Quill is just as much a “loser” as Luann, a word I put in quotes because they are definitely pursuing their aspirations. But they’re getting older, and they need to start looking at their futures rationally. While being an actor may seem lucrative, drama majors have an especially slim chance of making it big, and an increasingly high probability of becoming assistant janitor at Weenie World.
Juan 2099 almost 11 years ago
Luann needs to be more like Brad. While a fireman may initially seem unwise as a career choice, the pay is decent, the hours are not strenuous, and the pension is great.
live2read almost 11 years ago
If Luann wants to be a certified drama queen, she’s accomplishing her goal. Right now, she sounds a lot like Annette Bening’s Carolyn Burnham in “American Beauty.”

I*f you listen to Q, you will be a housewife with 2 kids, and a carer, if you go as you “envision it” you will live downtown, with 10 kids, and one in the way
luann1212 almost 11 years ago
You know I have not commented for awhile, but when I do it’s because I have been sort of compelled to do so to defend Luann herself. Of course she is meant to be a person, who is not perfect, but is a very normal, goodhearted, romantic, and lets face it, horny young teenage female. All perfectly normal. She is definitely not a loser because she decided to go to community college (it’s not junior college Greg, particularly if it’s a public institution); there are countless examples of extremely successful and smart people who attended community college. She misses her boyfriend, which is very important to her, so she has normal frustration. Lets see how this arc works out. It seems like pretty normal boyfriend/girlfriend interplay to me.
Meh~tdology, fka Pepelaputr almost 11 years ago
If you just want to “make out”, Luann. What are you doing meeting at Weenie World?
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
This might describe Luann’s week (with the exception of Sunday for whatever reason): “…moanday, tearsday, wailsday, thumpsday, frightday, shatterday.” (James Joyce, 1882 – 1941) ;)
barbarasbrute almost 11 years ago
And they say that girls mature faster than guys……….. Apparently these 2 didn’t get that memo.
Caldonia almost 11 years ago
It’s 2014 and only an extremely backwards girl would marry and make babies with a guy she met in high school. How come some of y’all want that for Luann?

Ruh-rohhh… looks like Luann has a bad case of “horny”.
Caldonia almost 11 years ago
I think a lot of old-fashioned men are commenting.

Dump ’er. Do it now, Q.
MDeB almost 11 years ago
What is wrong with Quill?
Has he had hormone removal therapy?
Why doesn’t he want to make out, like any normal guy?
beggar almost 11 years ago
Good grief, Quill. Can’t you enjoy being 18? It’s like she’s dating a 40 year old.
bgby4884 almost 11 years ago
He says: we have to talk about both. But, he clearly is only interested in his career. Drop him, LuAnn. Let him go hug Ms. Marzonne.
Emmett Wayne almost 11 years ago
Look at Luann in the last frame. She looks just like Shannon when she whines! LOL!
seanyj almost 11 years ago
Just give her what she wants Quill so she’ll shut up!
PMark almost 11 years ago
It would appear that one of these two is trying to grow up.
Barry1941 almost 11 years ago
From my point of view she pretty much sleep walked through high school. Surprised she could into a college at all.
Barry1941 almost 11 years ago
Too bad the strip is called Luann and not Quill. She has become quite the Drama Queen.
manabouttown almost 11 years ago
And he travelled to America for this?
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
Quill is far too level-headed and rock-steady for the fickle, flighty, self-centered, and immature Luann. Indeed, rather than growing up like her classmates, she is reverting to more childish behavior that makes Tiffany look great by comparison….
PMark almost 11 years ago
Luann reminds me of her brother at her age. Brad was pretty much a useless lump of mashed potatoes until he was inspired by the heroics of the 9/11 responders. Then he decided to become a fireman.
Of course, there was a point when he was about to give it up, but Toni brought him around.(6/17/2004)
(6/18/2004)
BJShipley1 almost 11 years ago
Wow, Luann looks like she’s about to throw a Shannon-style tantrum in the middle of Weenie World. And this is supposed to be the hero of the strip?
TORAD_07 almost 11 years ago
I know I’m taking a huge risk by “going there…” but here I go…
Maybe it’s just me, grossly underestimating the potency of female hormones (as compared to males), but I’m at a loss to figure out why Lu is so focused on “getting some” at this point in life. That is, why is it the “priority” over education, etc. etc.
I guess I’m just a bit concerned that Lu sees it as a means to “get attention/acceptance…” something it would seem she perceives she needs. But that’s just not the way to do it, as that’s when all the “problems” happen (unwanted pregnancy, etc.)… If it is, truly, “physical gratification,” then fair enough… but it shouldn’t be the priority at this point. I dunno what made me say that… it certainly was for me at that age… :-) :-)
Like I say, maybe I grossly underestimate the potency of female hormones… Lu you need to sort out your priorities!

Wow, overwhelmed by the petty judgments. All that is wrong here is the kids are in different places at this time. As I have observed with my 2 teens and their friends, they develop differently. Some are world beaters in 3rd grade, some not until later in life. Luann needs closeness and intimacy, Quill needs career security and friendship. Nothing wrong with either. In any case, they are young and still learning.
Yvan Kelly almost 11 years ago
Luann has to be single for her to have adventures in college. This is the start of that process.
dalen2006 almost 11 years ago
Finally she says clearly what she is talking about. Guys are not typically good at picking up on nuance and reading between the lines – or reading minds.
feralglance almost 11 years ago
Ah. Okay, Luann, I can take you seriously again.
Willow Mt Lyon almost 11 years ago
Luann is acting like an 18 year old girl with no goals. She needs a big wake-up call, and that might be suddenly losing Quill. He should be honest and tell her exactly why he is leaving her, if this strip comes to that moment. That lame “I can’t be tied down to one girl right now” doesn’t cut it. She won’t learn or grow if he tells her that. ~All along I have wondered why Luann doesn’t go to Moony U where Quill is going. That would be the expected behavior of a girl with the maturity of Luann’s level. I don’t think Luann’s grades have anything to do with her decision to go to the local community college. She hasn’t even tried to be accepted by a university. Since she doesn’t know what she wants to study, she should do general education for her first two years of college.

Oh, we’re talking about the basics here.

After reading through all these comments, how many of us are thinking that they wish they had read them when they started dating? These opinions of both men and women who have lived through those times are priceless.
peninsulapal Premium Member almost 11 years ago
Mature guy, immature girl? She’s still in the wide-eyed, kissey face stage. He’s thinking for two…..Kind of a losing proposition if she doesn’t see the writing on the wall and get past her knight is shining armor phase. Oh well, a lot of us have been there and done that!!!
peninsulapal Premium Member almost 11 years ago
BTW, this may also be a taste of what Quill will get if he commits to her….a clingy cry baby with no life of her own. Too bad, sooooo sad! for him!!

Wake up, Luann! You probably won’t. But I’m hoping.

Good twist on stereotypes. Here it is the woman who just wants a physical relationship, and the man who wants something more!
wondra almost 11 years ago
Agree.
wondra almost 11 years ago
Why is making Luann a stup with no intrinsic interest in learning not funny anymore? Because that’s the way the world seems to be going?
Caldonia almost 11 years ago
Luann, forget Quill, you can make out with more interesting guys WHILE you go to the junior college and figure out what career you wanna do! It’s the best of both worlds! Not that you’re gonna do more than make out; it’s a family strip, and most of its fans are apparently extremely old-fashioned men who believe Tiffany is a scumbag just because she’s vain and wears short skirts!
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
As I see it, there is a difference in the maturity levels of the two. Quill is trying to balance the present with the future— specifically, his personal life with his career ambitions. Luann, on the other hand, is only concerned with the here and now, meaning “making out.” Incidentally, do today’s teenagers use that term? That is something that was said when I was an adolescent in the mid-1960s. My awareness indicates that these two characters are drifting apart. Things may unravel during this summer. Otherwise, it seems inevitable that Quill will lose interest in Luann when he attends college and meets someone who is more of a young woman than an older girl…
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
As much as I say that I am reluctant to make predictions about this comic, I will still prognosticate. All right, I see Quill and Luann on separate paths in the coming future. When the autumn days dawn upon this comic strip, the first quarter of the “freshman” year will have them embarking upon different paths. I envision some storylines dealing with Luann’s experiences at community college, contrasted with the life of Quill, Bernice, Tiffany and (possibly) Gunther at Moony U. But again, I am not the author…
melmarsh9v almost 11 years ago
Geez… I really don’t know why I follow this comic. As of today, my high school graduation is 44 years in the past. I can much easier relate to Crankshaft and Arlo & Janis at my age. But essentially, Get Fuzzy, Lio and Piranha Club are closer to my “personality!”
K M almost 11 years ago
Sure you wanna have this meltdown in public, Luann?
Barker62 almost 11 years ago
Luann meltdown. If that’s all she’s interested in Quill needs to move on. With luck he’ll find a mature woman who’s either beyond being a drama queen or doesn’t need to be one from the start.
