When we got our passports, back in 2008, we convinced our young adult son to do the same. He kept saying, “I won’t ever need a passport” but we suggested he get one anyway. Yep, he uses it ;-) I can easily see this happening with Gunther and his mom, too.

Sounds like mom dragged Gunther to the Post Office for a passport photo and application while they were out getting him some new shoes or sewing supplies or whatever.Surely, Gunther is smart enough to have questioned his mother on why she wanted to spend over $100 for a passport (more if he’s considered an adult in his state).

I wont believe he’s actually going until he gets off the plane in Lima (or wherever). Wouldn’t be the first time someone’s plans got derailed at the last minute.

But I don’t think Gunther is going to be cut out of the strip, just because he’s not in Pittsville. I don’t think Greg has ever done it before, but there’s no real reason why he can’t do a strip, or a week’s arc, of Rosa and Gunther in Peru between a storyline about Brad and Toni, and one about Delta attending orientation at Howard.

It’s not like Greg would have trouble drawing Peruvian architecture or vegetation in the background, he hardly ever draws backgrounds anyway!

I don’t necessarily see this as abandoning any hope of Gunther’s going on to college, either. He could still go on to Moony in a year, or decide to apply to Yale after all. I just hope he and Rosa don’t, umm, end up starting a family before they’re ready — but they’re both pretty hard-headed. I don’t think that’s very likely — unless Greg decides to tease us with a “false pregnancy” scare of some sort.

Good for Mrs. Berger! I hope she does have a fella waiting in the wings, as long as it isn’t Quill! Or Knute, God forbid!

Gunther’s mom has incredible powers of perception, to guess that Rosa and Gunther would not only work out, but work out so well he’d need a passport. Gunther must’ve told her ‘yeah, and Rosa was joking with me about going to Peru…’ Only for his mom to realize Rosa wasn’t joking, and she took foresighted steps to get Gunther on that plane and off to another country.

Well, that’s the comic world for ya. Gunther’s cajones have finally dropped. ‘For this reason a man leaves his mother and clings to his girlfriend, and the two become one…’ ;)

Holy cow! Rosa is making a huge mistake by going to “see the world” before she completes her education. About the only bigger mistake would be to skip college to chase one’s high school sweetheart. And Gunther’s about to make that mistake— with his mother’s blessing. This may make for interesting reading in the comics, but it is no way a good example to follow.

So will Gunther twist his way to Peru, pop back in a few years, reunite his friendship with Luann who will be heartbroken over a lost love, get engaged to Luann and get heartbroken when the guy with no personality, Aaron Hill, reemerges with a personality and ends up marrying Luann? Peru, yes. The rest of what I said, no. Bye Bye Gunthie. It’s been nice knowing you. :(

I think it depends on what Greg will decide Gunther’s long-term prospects in the strip are. He could very well do a lot of ’fish-out-of-water" arcs with Gunther in Peru …. or Gunther can disappear for a while totally.

My money is on the latter. If Lu and Gunther are destined for each other, eventually, then I think they need a little time apart, and they need to have other relationships for “training/practice” before they have a serious go at it.

    Both need this, I believe.

I have to admit I am surprised, considering that Gunther is a mama boy, that his mother is pushing him out of the nest. I would have thought she will tell Gunther he is not ready yet, needs to stay home with her for a bit, go to a local college, learn how to be independent before going all way down to Peru. This is a delightful surprise she did the opposite.

    C. Gunther lives on campus and visits his mom once a month.

Unlikely… if Moony Uni is within commuting distance of Pitts (which, so far, it seems to be)… One less expense that Gunther and/or Mom (or Financial Aid) would have to cover. And a large expense at that.

I’m still amazed that Bernice and Gunther etc., didn’t try for and get Stanford. I think they’d have all qualified for it. I can only guess that, for “gang cohesion/gathering” reasons, they all needed to be in close proximity to one another, if not attending the same school together. Now, they can all gather at WW or whenever TJ’s truck is around. Another reason why I think Moony Uni is within commuting distance.

Much like Gunther, I am an only child who went to “the local college” for engineering. Commuting would have been 20 minutes. Room and board was expensive and I could have saved a lot of money. However, I chose to live on campus and fully experience college.

Was your financial situation the same as Gunther’s? Did you finance your own college costs? Or did you get approval to live on campus from the one that did? If so, then that’s great. I don’t know if Gunther would have the same options, though. We are led to believe, I think, that his financial situation is not the best, and that living at home might be necessary and make the difference as to whether he can go to college at all. If he can live “on campus” and away from home, then by all means he should do so, for the reasons you state.

The point being, Gunther doesn’t have to leave the country to find himself. He just needs to leave his house and get used to being on his own.

Maybe so, but I think “being on his own” is more meaningful and valuable when it’s overseas in a foreign country, as opposed to being 20 minutes from home, where one would have more resources and to where one could more easily retreat, if need be.

I had free tuition. I used saved money for the first couple years, then got a small loan to cover the rest. I’d like to think Gunther would get scholarships and could manage a loan if he’s going into the lucrative STEM field.

One would hope. But there appears not to have been any mention of how he might finance college, yet. I guess the “Deus ex Machina” needs a little oil to get it running a bit more smoothly.
