Since this story is, well not up to par with S&C’s previous Dick Tracy tales (trying hard to be diplomatic here), I went ahead and bought the Calling Dick Tracy eBook to help get me through this. I gotta say what I’ve read so far is really, really good! I thought the story about how S&C got the Tracy gig was especially interesting. I’m sure I’m behind the curve here and most of you all have already read it but in case you haven’t, I highly recommend it!
See, I told you that Sam and Lizz and the Chief would be back soon. Interesting that Angus and his horse are still hanging around on the monitors in the background. I wonder if we’re going to hear something about them again.
From a sucker for time travel stories..One interesting problem in time travel stories is the maintenance of a time standard during which the time traveler is missing. This story is no different: Dick Tracy has gone back in time and, for the duration of time that he’s in 1944, he is now missing in 2014..Of course, such inconsistency helps fuel the speculation that Annie’s 1944 is, in fact, fictional (a fake)..My favorite time travel story was an old-time radio program, Dimension X, I think it was. The gist of the story was about an alien who came to earth and picked up an earthling..That earthling was a prospector who had set off a charge of dynamite in his mine. The alien then takes the miner on a trip through time, showing him why the human race needed to be “pruned.”.After their joy ride through time, the alien noted that he had to go home and bring back reinforcements for the “pruning.” He then asked the miner where he wanted to be dropped off..Thinking quickly, the miner told him to leave him at the mine a few seconds before the blast..The miner got away. The alien did not..I’d love to see that kind of angle woven into this tale..Heck, why not throw in an alien while we’re at it?.Where’s Moon Maid when we really need her?
Only 25 comments so far today? Perhaps a tip of the hat to W H H who suggested that this story is not quite up to par..As for me, I’ll just say, the jury is still out..As for NG49, until the last couple of days, I was more than convinced, as you, that this is a faux time travel story, as you said. The main problem I see with that right now is the Annie we have seen this last week. She appears genuine and does not appear to be trying to deceive anyone, let alone Tracy..Even though the “facts” she is trying to relay to Tracy do appear “faux.”.Making the erroneous 1944 calendar is, I think, too obvious of a clue: Why should we know this early in the story that Annie’s 1944 is a fake? Why should Richard already be in contact with Annie this early, for that matter?.And while we’re at it, why should the MCU know that Axel is involved already?.We already know where Annie is, we know who the bad guy is: Perhaps this is what W H H was trying to say..It may be a long five months or so to go..Last, and certainly least:.I was not aware that Pouch was necessarily “uncooperative”; he didn’t seem so during Sweatbox. If anything, I thought it was Mole who was worked up as he got understandably impatient wanting to protect his protégé, the Toad..Last words for now: This is a curious story; I’m not ready to “write it off” as not up to par or anything like that. It is demanding that I become at least somewhat of an Annie fan, which I am not, and that may be the problem some people are having with it.
I honestly don’t know what would constitute a “good” story for some of the fans here. Something that gives them tinglies running up and down their backs, and everlasting euphoria at just the thought of Dick Tracy? Me, I’m happy with intriguing stories and good art, and this one certainly has both. I guess I have a lower threshold for what pleases me in a daily comic strip. To each his own.
You can’t please everyone all of the time. Me I am liking it. And you don’t have to know much about Annie other than she disappeared and it was never resolved. Otherwise just take it as a Tracy story. I find it up to par and exceeding it if it is possible.Well I admit that I’m very discriminating when it comes to stories. I just know S&C are capable of better than this. They’ve already proven that. The good news is that this story can only get better and that’s what I’m hoping for. If Tracy is indeed in 1944, an appearance of one of Tracy’s old nemesis such as Pruneface, Brow, Flattop, etc would go a long way to make the story better.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/atlas_obscura/2014/03/17/the_blue_mustang_is_part_of_several_conspiracy_theories_centered_on_denver.html.A link to my favorite horse..I’ll take Blucifer over Nightmare any day!.(That’s him on my postage stamp!)
I honestly don’t know what the complaining is about.
All of those complainers who’ve wanted to see Tracy doing old-fashioned detective work have certainly gotten what they wanted. Plus, we’ve got some of comics’ greatest characters, and a mystery that we can’t figure out.I like the characters, and the fact that the plot has a lot of uncertainties. That’s what makes for a good mystery.
“Saturdays and Sundays are usually fractions of the weekly out put. Has nothing to do with the quality of the stories at all.”Plus, I’m guessing some people are gone since it’s a holiday weekend.
I didn’t mean to suggest that there was anything wrong with the quality of weekend stories. I’m actually fairly certain that it’s because some people access the site from work or don’t have as much time on the weekends, not primarily because of the content.
I’m happy that most of you all are really enjoying this and in all fairness I guess I do enjoying the present story to a certain degree or else I wouldn’t bother to come here and read it everyday. I just don’t think it’s one of their better ones. But hey, something can still happen that changes my mind since it’s still relatively early.

I enjoy Joe Staton’s art so much, I wish the strip would go back to four panels a day.

See the June 15, 2014 strip.
They mention meeting the informant and the last panel shows the Pouch being “persuaded” to talk by Punjab.

I sense that Tess has spent more time with Johnny Adonis than Tracy cares to know.

I don’t know what you constitute better. They would be be fakes, either actors or brain washed as much as “Annie” is.
Huh???
